Kunene governor intervenes in mine dispute Kunene governor Vipuakuje Muharukua has asked parties to a dispute over the reopening of Goantagab Mine near Khorixas to make presentations on the issue to his office. This comes after Dâure Daman Traditional Authority senior councillor Herman Naruseb petitioned the governor to intervene in the dispute, which has spilled into the courts. “The suspension of the mining activities has had a direct and adverse impact on our community, particularly on those members who were temporarily employed during the mine’s brief operational period. The resultant income loss continues to affect livelihoods, and uncertainty around the future of the project is a growing concern,” Naruseb says in the petition. Goantagab Mine is located in the Sorris Sorris conservancy, under the Dâure Daman Traditional Authority.” “I am aware of the petition sent to me by the Dâure Daman community and my office has asked the stakeholders to make presentations, and I await responses from them,” the governor said on Monday. On 16 May, the governor’s office wrote to Timoteus Mashuna, who owns mining claims at Goantagab, and Ultimate Safaris, a tourism company operating in the area. “Our office notes with interest that Ultimate Safaris and Timoteus Mashuna are engaged in a dispute over mining activities in the Dâures constituency and requires dispute resolution measures. The governor emphasises the importance of tourism, conservation and mining in our nation and region … and cordially invites your representation on the matter,” reads the letter. Muharukua said this will enable him to have more insight into this issue and thus determine the course ahead.” “I don’t want to have preconceived ideas, but I trust we can bring the two companies together. “We want to conserve, we want tourism, we also want to create jobs, we want to mine, and I don’t think these two interests are mutually exclusive,” the governor said.Mashuna welcomes Muharukua’s intervention as progressive.” My claims cover only a small area of about four square kilometres hidden in the mountains and the rest of more than 2 000 hectares is there for tourism activities,” he says. Mashuna says he had written to former governor Marius Sheya over the dispute because “the situation is impeding the progress of a project that holds substantial promise for the Kunene region”. Ultimate Safaris managing director Tristan Cowley acknowledges receipt of the governor’s letter but says the three conservancies – Sorris Sorris, Doro Nawas, and Uibasen Twyfelfontein – will write a joint response to the governor. “This is a matter between the conservancies, Ultimate Safaris, Mashuna, and Ottilie (Ndimulunde).” He says he does not think the governor’s intervention would help resolve a dispute that is already subject to court proceedings. The governor, however, said he was aware of the court proceedings on the matter. “I don’t think it prevents us as a government to address the dispute, because the petition talks about potential employment creation, and people who are now without jobs, and that is high on the agenda of Swapo, so we want to strike a balance between the two entities, depending on the nature, and extent of the dispute,” he said. The governor said he will be visiting the mine soon. – matthew@namibian.com.na The post Kunene governor intervenes in mine dispute appeared first on The Namibian.

Muharukua to tackle Kunene youth unemployment Kunene governor Vipuakuje Muharukua aims to tackle youth unemployment in the region by developing a database to easily contact unemployed youth for job opportunities. Muharukua said this during a meeting held at the Etoshapoort Community Hall at Outjo on Sunday. “We are fortunately developing a database to capture information of the unemployed in the region. When opportunities come up, we want to be ready to provide jobs,” he said. He called on unemployed youth in the area to register for the database by providing their identification documents and CVs. “We have the roadworks between Khorixas and Kamanjab, as announced by honourable Veikko Nekundi, and we want to be ready to give them jobs. “We aim to streamline opportunities accordingly and provide opportunities straight to the unemployed. We want to make sure opportunities are equitably distributed in the region,” Muharukua said. He said they are collaborating with the Ministry of Justice and Labour Relations to tackle how both skilled and unskilled youth can be absorbed into the workforce. “We need to find a way to capacitate the unskilled and skilled youth for opportunities. This exercise is the same as what the Ministry of Justice and Labour Relations is doing; ours is not unique.” The governor said he will engage with the private sector, particularly in tourism and agriculture, to plan how to absorb unemployed youth into quality, sustainable jobs. He also assured the attendees that it is not going to be business as usual and that their office is going to fulfil promises made during last year’s election. Kunene rejoices in home success Tears of joy and relief flowed freely inside a packed Outjo Sport Stadium yesterday as host region Kunene claimed a historic first Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup title following a 2-0 win over Kavango West at Outjo. Goals by Dixon Khuriseb and the tournament’s best player, Brundhino Kandirikirira, ensured victory, sparking scenes of delirium as the home support rejoiced in finally ending decades of poor performances. Winning head coach Uerikondjera ‘Mammie’ Kasaona, who was carried aloft by her players at the final whistle, was speechless after guiding her home region to glory and in the process becoming the first woman to win the competition in that capacity. “This is a wonderful moment for my region. Thank you to the Kunene region for showing up in numbers to make sure that indeed we are a great people, and to show the nation what we can bring. Imagine, 23 years of this great competition and we just go out in the group stages,” a hoarse Kasaona said as her players and team’s supporters belted out victory songs and danced in the background. The victory was a fitting conclusion to the youth sport festival after four days of pulsating and non-stop action by the country’s next generation of stars. Two-time former winners Oshana finished third after beating one-time champion //Kharas 3-1 in the bronze medal. Ex-Kunene governor and chairperson of the local organising committee Marius Sheya say they had prepared to win both the football and netball competitions. “When we bid for this event I told the owners of this event that you’re going to take this event to Kunene and we’re going to win it. It’s unfortunate that we didn’t win the netball, but we gave our best,” says Sheya. Sheya says he was vindicated for pushing that Kasaona be appointed, having been impressed with her burgeoning reputation as a youth coach. Kunene coach Uerikondjera Kasaona is hoisted up by her players after winning the final. Photo: Contributed “I’m very happy and I’m emotional. I said can we change the coach and get a female coach who is very capable. And for the first time, a female coach has won this tournament. This is history. Thank you to everyone who supported our cause,” Sheya says. Kavango East reclaimed the netball crown, defeating perennial bridesmaids Omaheke 40-21 in a thrilling final contest. Kavango East netball team head coach Frans Ndara says: “Our team worked very hard during the preparations for the games and that has now paid off handsomely.” Ohangwena took third place by beating Khomas, who had won the netball title for the past three years, 42–33. It marked the first time in more than three years that Khomas did not finish in the top three. Deputy sport minister Dino Ballotti was on hand to witness the grand finale which left a lasting impression. “Well done to the people of Kunene for hosting such a wonderful spectacle. Congratulations to the champions Kunene for winning the football and Kavango East for winning the netball final,” Ballotti says. Kavango East pose with the trophy after beating Omaheke in the final. Photo: Contributed “The ministry and the sponsors have put millions into this event over the years for the infrastructure enhancement, sport development and providing a platform for our youth to showcase their talent with pride,” he adds. “These smart partnerships are what we want to continue to manifest all over the country. There are thousands here today, a testament that sport unifies Namibians.” INDIVIDUAL AWARDS Netball: Martha Mbulu (best shooter, Ohangwena); M Mukungu (best defender, Kavango East), Ndilimenke Erastus (player of the tournament, Ohangwena), Selma Bitler (umpire of the tournament); Victoria Shigwedha (most improved umpire). Football: Brundino Kandikirira (player of the tournament); Michael Jonas (Oshana, top scorer) and Brundino Kandikirira (Kunene, top scorer); Micheni Kavendjii (best goalkeeper, Kunene); Michael Kashiku (best referee, Omusati); Kingsley Gaseb (best assistant referee, Otjozondjupa). Kunene motorists, pedestrians urged to desist from crossing flooded rivers Kunene police regional commander commissioner James Nderura has urged motorists and pedestrians to refrain from crossing flooded rivers, following heavy downpours recorded in the region over the past three weeks. Nderura on Wednesday emphasised the dangers of crossing or attempting to navigate flooded rivers, noting that the Kunene rivers are among the most hazardous, given the record of lives lost to drowning and vehicles being swept away in recent years. “As we are all aware, the region continues to receive heavy rainfall; all motorists and pedestrians should avoid crossing flooded rivers at all costs. These rivers are very dangerous and pose a significant threat to us all, so I urge everyone to heed this warning and refrain from attempting to cross any of the flooded rivers,” he stated. According to Nderura, most roads in the region have become impassable due to flooded rivers and the lack of bridges, forcing those wishing to cross to wait until the rivers subside before continuing their journeys. “Most roads are not accessible on foot or by vehicle. As we know there are no effective bridges at many of our river crossings, so everyone should wait until the water levels are lower before attempting to cross,” he added. Aside from two fatalities over the weekend due to drowning at Opuwo and Farm Lekkerwater, Nderura said the region has not recorded any drowning incidents in the past two days. Rivers reported to be heavily flooded in the region include Okangwati, Etanga, Oute, Onungurua and Otjiumuhaha. Others include the Sesfontein and Omao rivers, particularly the stretch between Epupa and Onungurua. Kunene ramps up Newspaper Cup preparations With just over three weeks to go before this year’s Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup kicks off, host region Kunene says preparations are in the final stages. The football and netball competition runs from 18 to 21 April at Outjo, bringing together the best under-20 talent from across Namibia while also reinforcing critical wildlife conservation efforts. Speaking after the penultimate site inspection of the athletes’ accommodation and playing facilities on Tuesday, Kunene governor Marius Sheya, who doubles as the local organising committee’s head, said the region is 90% ready to host the prestigious tournament. “We have done quite a lot in terms of hostel accommodation. All three hostels are in an advanced stage, and by next week, we should have the completion of most of these facilities,” Sheya said. “Equally, the sport facilities are almost ready, with about 90% of the work completed. We believe that within the next two weeks, everything will be fully operational.” The governor also expressed satisfaction with the inspection visit conducted by officials from The Namibian, the Namibia Football Association and Netball Namibia. Their visit follows an initial assessment last month when a number of improvements were recommended to ensure the smooth running of the competition. “I am satisfied that we have addressed almost all the shortcomings that were highlighted in the initial report,” Sheya noted. “As a region, we are fully prepared to welcome Namibians from all walks of life, especially the participating teams.” He also revealed that beyond football, this year’s edition of the Nedbank Newspaper Cup will also serve as a platform to raise awareness against the poaching of elephants, lions and rhinos. Sheya said the event will include an official opening ceremony, followed by a free music concert aimed at spreading a strong anti-poaching message. “We, together with The Namibian and Nedbank, have dedicated this year’s edition to the protection of wildlife,” Sheya stated. “This is why we are planning a concert for young people to advocate against poaching. We want to send a clear message that the future generation of this country is against poaching, and we say no to it.” The post Kunene ramps up Newspaper Cup preparations appeared first on The Namibian.
