A Large Red Damselfly, mid-way through emerging from its larval exoskeleton as a winged adult. The larval exuvia is clinging to a vertical plant stem, but has split open at the head and along the back of the thorax, and the damselfly is half out of it, with its wings and legs clear but the lower part of its abdomen still inside the exuvia.

A newly emerged Large Red Damselfly clings to the stem she used as her emergence support. Only her head and thorax, and a short section of her abdomen and wings, are included in the image. Her thorax is striped in pale yellow and metallic bronze. the top of her head is bronze, and her eye is light brown above, shading down to yellow below, with two darker brown lines running horizontally across it. Her abdomen is only partially coloured, but shows the beginnings of the red and yellow ring markings she will display as an adult.

A Large Red Damselfly perches on a laurel leaf, angled upwards from the bottom left corner of the image towards the top right. Her long, slender abdomen is mainly red, with some patches of black on the lower segments and thin bands of black and yellow at the segment junctions. Her wings are clear, each with a single black wing spot. Her abdomen is metallic bronze on top, with two stripes of deep yellow along the sides, and pale cream underneath. Her eyes are red above and orange below, with two darker red horizontal stripes.
