Before Covid we had lots of face to face. Now an asynchronous learning.
What does good coaching look like? Moved to also focus on What does the learner actually want?
How do we support people with their tasks and concerns for the role? Worked hard on this. New website CoachCast
‘Feedback absolutely key to a learning culture’ says Mandy Jane Rutherford from Wave. Speaking my language!
It doesn’t just happen though - Wave did a campaign, a programme of learning and a platform to develop a feedback culture

In the final session of the day on Creating a Learning Culture ( #T1S6 ) and Gemma Paterson talking about how at Lloyds one of the most important things is that there is dedicated time for personal development and it is protected.

‘We have trained the business that we are good at creating content and not solving problems’
How Zsolt solved that at Amazon was giving anyone who didn’t want to measure impact a self guided content creation tool. All of a sudden the content wasn’t that important.

Slide with a medieval version of Shakira with a quote saying Data, like hips, don’t lie
Folks can get a bit judgy about using slides, thinking being able to simply talk is the best form of presentation but when we are learning something new, visuals + humour + metaphor help us remember. My team was able to remember all four of the core principles thanks to these.

Struggling getting the business to commit to measuring impact? Tell them their project is therefore less of a priority

Speaker in front of slide with picture of the game and the words Focus: speaking the language of impact: data
Goals for the session 1) think about data differently when you leave, as a language and 2) not to take notes but to listen to each other and play a game!

Next up Zsolt Olah Data literacy - the essential skill for L&D today.
Zsolt reminding people when they come in that there is no AI here and yes there is relief at getting a break from it

Q: What is the best practice for training a global organisation on ai?
A: There isn’t any yet and don’t just think of it about skills development, but as a change management programme
#LT24UK #T1S4
Final thought from Egle: you must start with strategic intent and build relationships to be successful
#LT24UK #T1S4
Key takeaways from examples:
* find vendors willing to flex - partner where technology is nearly there but not quite what you need
* be prepared to learn somethings that will be hard to hear
* create an environment of experimentation and get a mandate to unlock support
#LT24UK #T1S4
Slide with an L&D complexity scale
Slide with uses of AI in L&D in a bar chart
So what is L&D using it for? Mostly learning design task, content creation but not the most valuable things like performance support. Why? That gets more complex with more stakeholders.
#LT24UK #T1S4
Most common question Egle gets about ai? ‘What is everyone else doing?’
Followed closely by ‘am I falling behind?’
#LT24UK #T1S4
Markus perhaps trying to be reassuring to this group by giving examples about how it can be used in the contexts of workshops and training, rather than replacing them.
#LT24UK #T1S4
Conversational ai: we could practice our arguments, simulate meetings with difficult people and ask for advice from a super colleague
Experiential ai: bespoke simulations with pathways for my personal journey
#LT24UK #T1S4
Very glad the energy costs of AI got a mention from Markus. My first thought on seeing that video of sea creatures riding bicycles on the beach was how much forest had to burn to create it.
#LT24UK #T1S4
Markus starts by reminding us this isn’t new. He was talking about AI 5 years ago though to a much smaller crowd. But then came generative ai and what could come next is transformative beyond challenging Netflix.

Screen with the session title and speakers, and three chairs underneath, one occupied with Don Taylor
Getting ready to kick off AI in L&D with a full house!
Lots of people want to know where we are, what’s changing and what we should do.
We’ll be hearing from Egle Vinauskaite and Markus Bernhardt, chaired by Don Taylor himself.

Had a fab day yesterday at Learning Technologies with the rest of the social media team.
Yesterday was organisational network analysis and self directed learning.
Today it will be A&I in L&D (#T1S4) and Data Literacy (#T5S5)

What's your Practice for keeping your skills fresh? Not just taxonomy but also catalogue, intelligence etc... Peter Sheppard mentioned updating this once a month. Are you ready for this? What would need to be in place for that to be possible? #LT24UK #T3S3 #skills #LearningTechnology
Q from the session: Thoughts on having a "chief skills officer" for an org? (possibly separately from L&D)? #LT24UK #T3S3
Starling confesses being a minimalist when it comes to data collection. Important because the temptation is often to gather more info but that just leads to noise.
He says you don’t need a 150 question culture survey.
Think you might agree @muireannbird.bsky.social!

ohhhhh GREAT question being thrown in in the #storytelling session: What (if anything) is the role of controversy, provocation or challenge in a narrative? #LT24UK #T2S2 Hadiya Nuriddin is for emphasizing the positive, and what you can back up.
What do you think, bluesky folks?
Storytelling session by Hadiya Nuriddin love this basic narrative as a tool to explore, to fill in the gaps, to engage people and to keep all the pieces together. Super useful. #storytelling #T2S2 #LT24UK Learning Technologies Exhibition & Conference #LearningTechnologies
Speaker in front of opening slide
Getting ready to kick off the social learning session with Starling Hunter talking about organisational network analysis.
Who is influencing who in an organisation has such an impact in culture. Really looking forward to this one!
Will be mostly tweeting this one from msabella

Mental well being is an need that must be met for self-directed learning to work.
This brings us back to the first point of blocking 20% of employee time - so many people are just completely overwhelmed by their jobs that asking them to own their development is just too much

Speaker in front of a picture of a Llama
Detlef Hold from Roche opening his session on self-directed learning by telling us about the beautiful country of Ecuador.
Now challenging us on the fact that we never have ‘time’ for learning? What exactly are we doing instead?
Being kept busy, not thinking about it as a topic,

We open the 25th edition of Learning Technologies with a question from our host Don Taylor - where do you WANT to see L&D in 5 years? Best answers (imho):
* Advances in technology making the admin and drudgery disappear
* Diversity, equity and inclusion woven through our systems
