A messy garden is a glorious garden. We need to stop tidying, titivating and paving them over | Emma Beddington I’ve just watched another of my neighbours rip up everything green and growing around their home, writes Emma Beddington. It’s enough to make David Attenborough weep

This is probably anathema to tidy gardeners! I often shake my head at all the hardscaping done around houses, which also inhibits drainage, shunts water into the streets, increases flooding and subsidence, etc. But who am I to say?

Normally I leave native plants alone, but I’m moving the sand and gravel in which it took root. There are plenty of others around. #naturalgardening #nativeplants

A single bare pale waxy green stem rises about a foot from the soil ( we see only the upper part)topped with 3 leaves each composed of 3 narrow stronbgly toothed fresh medium green leaflets and a small cluster of purple pink buds with a single open flower. You might not immediately peg this as a member of the mustard/cabbage/cress family Brassicaceae, but the 4 simple petals over a bit of a tube might give you a hint!Afternoon sun is mostly catching the flower and leaflets, but the background is a mix of sun highlights and dark shadows among the dense growth of the tiny Anemone ranunculoides, with its terminal palmate leaves finely toothed, dull dark green blending to wine violet in centre, each bearing a single bud.

A cluster of small natural form tulips rises between rocks, with a large rounded speckled pinky granite behind. The many leaves are long and narrow, a bit wavy and folded up from the middle on each side, a waxy pale blue green, all rising from the ground and arcing outwards, not too high. In the centre are several flower stems bearing a total of 5 flowers plus some buds. Flowers are white with 3 shortish triangular petals and outside that 3 longer narrower sepals. Next to the tulip on each side are low mounding/mat like plants of Draba with tight spiky dark green leaves and tiny flowers that nearly cover the plants, though they are fading now. Also a single tiny golden flowered seedling tulip of another sort to one side.

Snakes & Marigolds!

Tried marigolds to deter snakes from our house/garden this year

Turns out, black snakes don’t mind marigolds. Hahahah of course! BUT, black snakes are good snakes to have around in Florida, so it’s cool. We can be friends!

The beetle is left of centre on the nearly ball-like flower head; a greish fly with reddish eyes is at the top of the cluster, another flower head and leaves visible behind.
General description of beetle and flowers:
A medium size beetle- maybe around 1 inch/a couple of cm long.It is roughly shield shaped, wider at the 'shoulders' narrower toward the back end. It is light yellowy tan coloured on top (wing casings, I presume) with several small black dots and on each upper side a row of irregularly shaped near/black markings. Its legs are dark red-brown, as are its segmented antennae. It seems to have a long neck (not an actual beetle body part..lol) between its small dark head and wider body (front body is the thorax, rear body called abdomen- I'm not sure in this case whether the thorax is only the small section between head and where the wing casings start: the lower part of the body is hard to see). Overall, the beetle is finely dusted with yellow pollen.
It is busily feeding on flower heads (pollen and presumably nectar also) a couple of inches/ handful of cm acoss composed of many many tightly packed tiny yellow flowers with a forest of tiny pollen bearing stamens. There are many of these flower heads, with flowers open to varying extents, borne at the end of stems clothed with whorls of closely placed blue green toothed leaves narrowly rhomboid to oblanceolate with mostly pointed tips.

Another view with beetle and fly they have shifted position, moving clockwise the beetle is not nearing 12, fly is around 3. # flowerheads lined up in a row from lower centre right to upper left.

Close view of the beetle from side kind of, back end nearer us. We can see some interesting/complicated mouth parts! It sits near the edge of one of the flower heads, some blurred leaves visible behind.

‼️IT’S ALSO SMART GARDENING‼️

You can relax more and enjoy the flowers, bees, butterflies, and birds because native plants require a lot less work than taking care of a “perfect” green turf grass lawn.
