Alberico da Barbiano was a Giussano-class light cruiser of the Regia Marina (Royal Italian Navy). The Italian High Command ordered Alberico da Barbiano and her sister Alberto di Giussano to deliver desperately needed aviation fuel and supplies to Tripoli. Owing to urgency, fuel barrels were stowed on deck which drastically increased vulnerability. On 13 December 1941, while transiting near Cape Bon, Tunisia, they were intercepted by a force of British and Dutch destroyers using radar to locate their position. In a night engagement, torpedoes and gunfire struck both cruisers; Alberico da Barbiano was engulfed in fire and sank rapidly, with heavy loss of life including Rear Admiral Antonino Toscano and her captain.

The Italian battleship Duilio was one of two vessels of the Andrea Doria class, constructed for the Regia Marina during the First World War. Laid down in 1912 at the Castellammare di Stabia shipyard and commissioned in 1915, Duilio represented Italy’s effort to field modern dreadnought battleships capable of contesting control of the Mediterranean. Although completed during wartime, she saw no direct combat in the First World War, as the conflict at sea remained largely constrained by cautious fleet strategies on both sides. In her original configuration, Duilio displaced about 24,700 tonnes and was armed with thirteen 305 mm guns mounted in five turrets. Her protection and propulsion reflected pre war design priorities, with moderate armour and steam turbines giving a maximum speed of roughly 21 knots. Like many contemporary battleships, she quickly became obsolescent in the interwar period as naval technology advanced and treaty limitations shaped fleet development. The lead ship of her class of three dreadnought battleships (along with Giulio Cesare and Leonardo da Vinci), Conte Di Cavour was launched om 10 August 1911 and commissioned into the Italian Regia Marina on 1 April 1915. She saw no action during World War One. During World War Two, she took part in the Battle of Calabria on 9 June 1940 when, along with Giulio Cesare she engaged elements of the British Mediterranean Fleet. The Italian fleet retired when Giulio Cesare was hit by a shell from HMS Warspite. While in Taranto, Conte Di Cavour was struck by a torpedo during the British night attack of 11/12 November 1940. She was grounded to prevent her sinking the next morning. She was still undergoing repairs at Trieste on 8 September when Italy surrendered to the Allies. Although captured by the Germans they made no attempt to continue the repairs. She was damaged in an air raid on 17 February 1945, and capsized on 23 February. Refloated shortly after the end of the war, Conte di Cavour was scrapped in 1946.

Adriatico, 1,976 GRT, armed with two 4" guns and crewed by 90 or so men, was running supplies alone to Benghazi. Her captain, a Lt.Cdr. of the #RegiaMarina, decided to fight it out with 2 light cruisers and 2 destroyers, at practically point blank range (<6,000 yards) rather than surrender.
