YEAH! 🎉
Today #BEN-EAF kicks off as collaboration of Eurac Research, South Tyrol (@euracalpenv.bsky.social) and the James Hutton Institute (@hutton.ac.uk), Scotland.
We will identify alpine #SoilFauna in the Highlands using traditional and modern #eDNA methods.
Stay tuned!

Our in-house press team at Eurac Magazine published an article about the soil biology research of @jseeber.bsky.social and myself where we focus on alpine environments.

Conceptual diagram illustrating (a) the experimental design and (b) the mass, C, N and P remaining of green and senesced litter on lawn and soil surfaces under conditions with or without soil fauna.
The #GreenLitter and senescent litter (Cinnamomum camphora) generated by #TropicalCyclones exhibit distinctly different distribution patterns on the lawn and soil microhabitats.

Photo of different sticker sets with a lot of critters (insects and soil fauna) created by Svenja Meyer.
Hey, as I do love soil animals and critters, I did support an artist who draws very nice pictures of the vast variety of #SoilBiodiversity (mainly #SoilFauna). Stickers for the kids 🤩
If you love #soil too, support @fminifera.bsky.social at smartwork.bigcartel.com

Figure showing the number (sizes) and distribution along global mountain regions of scientific publications that focus on alpine soil biodiversity.
(3/4) 🌍 Most publications came from Central Europe (#EuropeanAlps) & Central Asia (#TibetanPlateau).
The research focus on each global mountain region differed: an alpine #SoilFauna research hub is found in Central Europe, for #Biocrusts also in Northern Europe, and for microbiota in Central Asia.
5/ Therefore, this work underscores how climate and biodiversity jointly shape ecosystem functioning, and why #SoilFauna communities and #SoilBiodiversity in general deserve more attention in global change ecology. 🌍🪱

Can we please have more of such #ecology #zoology project videos? 😉
Here they are combining #research on #arthropods in mountain areas, #ElevationalGradients, and #DNAsequencing to assess the #SoilFauna in 🇿🇦, old and new one.

Our highest pitfall traps so far at 3300m close to glaciers.
A small cross depicts the summit of Hohe Wart (Guardia Alta) at 3424m in the Central European Alps.
#Alpine #SoilFauna season ended with an astonishing #hike close to #glacier.
As bonus we hiked up to the Hohe Wart (Guardia Alta, 3424m), which is on the crest towards the #Similaun (3606m).
In our samplings, we found something surprising 🥳 more details will be soon published in a short notice ✌️

What an adventure 🤠
We as #AlpSoil_Lab from @euracalpenv.bsky.social set up our highest pitfall traps yet at high #alpine sites at 3300m and 3100m.
These #GLORIA sites are quite steep and challenging to reach, but I can't wait to see the #soilfauna living up there 🔍

Parallel to other #SoilEcology project, we at the #AlpSoil_Lab of #EuracResearch started with the #SnowBed project to sample #SoilMesofauna in #alpine environment.
Late this year but it is sunny up there!

It's alpine sampling time, and this week we did the first samplings of #SoilFauna in the #GLORIA project, where plants and animals are monitored on remote #mountain peaks every 5 years.
Here the "lower" sites, quite steep but very beautiful places to work. 🤠
