In the "New-York Gazette," on DECEMBER 25, 1775:

"His Majesty's Ships the Phoenix and Asia now lie in the East River; the latter
opposite Murray's Wharff; and the former near Burling's Slip..."

For Hanukkah: Believed to be the first-ever Jewish sermon published in the American colonies. Raphael Hayyim Isaac Carregall, a rabbi visiting from Hebron, delivered the sermon on May 28, 1773, at the Touro synagogue in Newport, RI, the oldest synagogue in the US.

Old cookbooks are a favorite find. Along with long lost recipes—Brain Cakes, anyone?—these volumes contained cures & played a vital role in 18th-century life. Some were so valuable they were plagiarized on both sides of The Pond. This is from the Sarah Fayerweather Cookbook (1764).

I watched a timely, if now bittersweet political movie this evening: "All the Way" (HBO Films, 2016). It stars Bryan Cranston as Lyndon B. Johnson during his eventful first year in office, which saw passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. I highly recommend it.

Text Shot: On November 5 we will find out just how strong we are. We will each choose on which side of the historical ledger to record our names. On the one hand, we can stand with those throughout our history who maintained that some people were better than others and had the right to rule; on the other, we can list our names on the side of those from our past who defended democracy and, by doing so, guarantee that American democracy reaches into the future.
