A rakiraki (mallard) contemplating the fate of an errant feather at Western Springs this morning. 🪶🇳🇿
A Blue Tit, perched on a vertical, lichen-covered twig (on the other side of that twig, from our perspective). The underside of the bird’s body and tail are facing towards us (with the tail pointing towards the bottom right corner of the image), with the head turned to face towards the left side of the image. Blue Tits are small, colourful, and characterful birds. The head is white with a blue crown, and black stripes encircling the cheeks. The underparts are yellow, with a short, often irregular, black stripe running down the middle of the belly. We can't see the wings or back here. The underside of the tail is grey. The beak, and the legs and feet, are dark grey.
More of a #TwigBird than a #BranchBird (today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme), but I’m going with it! A brilliant Blue Tit (from Brandon Marsh on Saturday) to end a #Plumescrolling thread in which we’ve seen pics of this species either approaching or departing. #Birds #UKWildlife #EastCoastKin #Photography 🌿
A Eurasian Skylark (Alauda arvensis) perched in a clump of Heather, facing towards the left of the picture. The Skylark is a small passerine (or perching) bird. The plumage is mostly pale brown or buff, with darker patches on the wing feathers and darker streaks and speckles on the chest, on the crest (which is raised) and on the back of the head. There is a well defined, pale line on the side of the head, running from the beak, past the eye, circling the cheek and ending at the pale patch below the beak. The beak, fairly short and pointed, is mostly yellowish, but dark along the top. The legs and feet of this particular bird are hidden in the heather.
#BirdOfTheDay, March 26th – the main theme today is #speckled. Here is a #Skylark, perched in some Heather while taking a break from skylarking about in the Stiperstones, #Shropshire, back in May 2024. #Birds #NaturePhotography #UKWildlife #EKC 🌿
Photo of a Eurasian Oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus) standing on a patch of ground with very short vegetation, and holding a long Earthworm in the tip of his or her beak. The bird is facing towards the left side of the picture. The Oystercatcher is a wading bird, which has black upperparts (including the head, neck, and the upper part of the chest), white underparts, a long orange beak, and pink legs and feet. The eye is red, with an orange rim and a black pupil.
This #Oystercatcher, though not an early bird, still managed to get the worm. A great image with which to start a #NaturePhotography thread featuring pics from my visit to @wildlifebcn.org Summer Leys reserve on Saturday.

Hedgehogs are solitary and avoid contact. This one realises there is one already in the feeder and retreats. The other one exits the feeder and realises it has company.

The Great spotted woodpecker ( Dendrocopos major ) each year carves a new nest hole in trees, which later becomes a shelter for other animals. It mainly eats insects and larvae, but also consumes seeds, nuts, and even bird eggs or chicks when food is scarce. Instead of melodic songs, it communicates by rapidly pecking on trees , this ¨drumming¨marks territory and attracts mates .

Did u know? When you purchase & use poisons in your outside spaces, the only winners are the chemical companies who produce them. The earth looked after itself before these destructive formulas were manufactured & it still can. There's always a more intelligent solution... 🌱🌿🇬🇧🌿🌍🪲🐞🪰
