Children younger than 5 years accounted for more than a third of deaths (86 600 [53 300–149 000]). #Streptococcuspneumoniae, #Neisseriameningitidis, non-polio #enteroviruses
& other viruses were the leading causes of death, while non-polio enteroviruses caused the most cases.

Non-polio enterovirus infection and electrophysiological changes in human iPSC-derived neural networks Our results demonstrate that neurotropic NPEVs lead to disruption of spontaneous neural activity in a virus-specific manner, which does not correlate with their replication efficiency.

🧠🦠Excited to share our latest work on non-polio enteroviruses (NPEVs) and their impact on the brain.

If you have to contend with the "BuT #COVID19 iS JuSt A CoLd!" crowd, I heartily recommend (for you AND them) the Wikipedia article on #enteroviruses. They're another group of cold viruses (the largest group in fact), besides coronaviruses. Polio is an enterovirus. But if you think polio is just […]

This week we introduced an #assembloid-based platform to begin studying how #enteroviruses affect human neuromuscular systems.

This is a collaboration with Jan Carette here at Stanford.

Two bar charts comparing the percentage of donors with two or more positive assays, grouped by different classifications.

Left chart (By donor classification):
Five groups: ND (n=36), AAb⁺ (n=15), AAb⁺⁺ (n=7), T1D-CI (n=30), and T1D-ID (n=22). The percentage of donors with ≥2 assays positive increases progressively across these groups: ND (~0%), AAb⁺ (~28%), AAb⁺⁺ (~29%), T1D-CI (~50%), and T1D-ID (~82%). Statistical significance is indicated with asterisks: *p<0.05, **p<0.01, ***p<0.001 between multiple group comparisons.

Right chart (By presence of autoimmunity/beta cells):
Four groups: No AI & beta cells (n=40), AI & beta cells (n=48), AI & no beta cells (n=11), No AI & no beta cells (n=11). Percentages: No AI & beta cells (~7%), AI & beta cells (~58%), AI & no beta cells (~0%), No AI & no beta cells (~0%). Highly significant differences (***p<0.001) noted between most comparisons.

Both charts share a y-axis labelled “Donors with ≥2 assays positive (%)” ranging from 0 to 100%.
