The 1st verified GB records of Fen Raft #Spider were from @suffolkwildlife.bsky.social Redgrave & Lopham Fen #NNR, #Ramsar site in 1956. Remnant populations have since been found at only 2 more sites but new populations established by translocation are thriving.
Always a bit of a surprise to flush #Snipe from habitats like this.

Large numbers of caps of the Fiery Milkcap Lactarius pyrogalus up under hazel in #Cothillfen #NNR woodlands on sandy soil. They look so innocent but taste (and spit) the milk with care, it will blow your head off with heat!

A view from Ranscombe Farm towards Luddesdown. Most of what's visible in the picture is core NNR or associated land. Rough grassland in the foreground, woods and open grassland in the background.
Iassus scutellaris - a leaf-hopper with green body and brown head, on an Elm leaf.
Vernal Shieldbug Peribalus strictus. A mid-sized shieldbug with a largely brown body and characteristic pale margins to the 'shoulders' of the pronotum.
Asiraca clavicornis, an unusual looking planthopper with expanded antennae and leaf-like front legs.
Spent the afternoon in part of the new North Kent Woods & Downs NNR. Was looking for Hop-garden Earwig (a no-show) but did find some nice bugs: Iassus scutellaris, Vernal Shieldbug Peribalus strictus & Asiraca clavicornis. #KentNature #NNR #bugs #Hemiptera @naturalengland.bsky.social

The delicacy of some fruiting bodies of some #fungi fascinates me. Here a fragile ink-cap growing on still moist peat at Cothill #fen #NNR. If I were to try & collect, it would disintegrate, so I'm just enjoying the lovely radial symmetry of gills seen here through transparent cap & shedding hairs
Great! found 8 Narrow-lipped Helleborines in flower at Aston Rowant #NNR in beechwood on chalk over last weeks - first time seen on site since 2016! Combo of two wet years followed by hot & dry yr? @rowantnnr.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social @chilternsnl.bsky.social @wildflowerhour.bsky.social
... The Maidstone Mining Bee was considered extinct for nearly a century till Grant found a population in Trosley Country Park in 2021. In Britain, this bee has never been found away from the chalk downs north-west of Maidstone. (2/2) #bees #hymenoptera #nnr

Odd, weird even, but it is all biodiversity. These strange green'granules' growing on very short chalk grassland turf are surely galls of the mite Aceria ononidis on Rest harrow Ononis repens at Aston Rowant #NNR. A normal ungalled shoot just visible. @rowantnnr.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social
Swathes of flowers @rowantnnr.bsky.social under the sunshine this week, including one of our favourites - Squinancywort. Here it can be found carpeting the tops of Yellow meadow ant hills #wildflower #NNR
Spectacular swathes of Common Valerian & Dropwort at #AstonRowant #NNR. Two of my favourite flowers & Dropwort always characteristic of old #grassland in my experience. When does Dropwort ever colonise any new areas today? The Valerian scent was beautiful. @bsbibotany.bsky.social #wildflower

Some #UrbanPlants and their friends for #WildflowerHour. Plants provide vital habitat, food and shelter for urban wildlife. All photos taken at Wigan Flashes - part of the Flashes of Wigan and Leigh National Nature Reserve.

Today's achievement: volunteer help in scrub removal in a hollow way using a tree popper at Aston Rowant #SSSI chalk grassland #NNR on the Chilterns. Just look at those bramble & hawthorn roots removed - they are not coming back! The smallest tree popper, the only one I can lift & favourite tool.

Stodmarsh #NNR, where the #KentWildlife today included lots of Variable Damselflies; wetland plants inc. Brown Sedge, Frogbit & Tubular Water-dropwort; booming Bitterns; many Hobbies; a couple of Cattle Egrets; 40-50 Swifts together ... and, you know, other stuff as well.
