It snowed. Again. April. Wow. My back yard is white.
This is some kind of nonsense where I notice the first dandelions blooming in the morning and tonight it’s all covered in an inch of snow. #northerngardening #gardening
Handful of one large Kelloggs Breakfast heirloom tomato.
Variety of harvested tomatoes, last orange is Kelloggs Breakfast
Garden break. Big harvest for container plants #garden #tomatoes #heirloom #northerngardening
A bouquet of flowers outside in front of some greenery. In the arrangement is a delphinium, sunflower, ranunculus, yarrow and a snapdragon
Pretty proud of today's homegrown bouquet. I still have lots to learn, but it's a beautiful hobby...

A tall row of wheat just about finished pushing out its green ears, five feet tall. A dog is mostly screened by the wheat
I'm going to call this row of winter wheat a success and plant some more.

Rows of young tomato plants. One row has a trellis, one row has a wobbly trellis partly in place, the last row has no trellis yet
A weedy garden with a row of young tomatoes under a trellis, some tomatoes mulched with straw, and some garden boxes with broccoli and kale growing in them
Two parallel rows of wood chips marked out with pink flags down the center of a garden, with barely visible baby kiwis planted in the wood chips
A contraption of dairy crates and boards protecting tried of tomatoes. The frost cloth has just come off the boards in preparation for trellises going in, and the chenopodium weeds are luxurious and almost hide the tomatoes
Trellises slowly going up. It's very hard on my body but hopefully they stay there once they're in. 7 for tomatoes, 2 for actinidia kolomikta. Concrete reinforcing wire or cattle panels plus t-posts.
I may have dislocated my pinkie slightly.

A tall, lush growth of white and and balansa clover in a field with a fence in the background and a narrow path barely visible through it
When I moved here, the first summer the yard was full of clover and the scent of its flowers filled the air. My geese pick the flowers off and mow it short, so one gardening goal was to return areas of clover to the property
Success

A bee visiting a wild columbine flower
The distinctive microchip-looking silver paths of the aspen leaf borer taking up roughly half of the surface of several aspen leaves
Ferny tall foliage of the sweet ciciley plant, topped with unripe seeds
A wire frame placed over a comfrey plant, which has been nibbled nearly flush to the ground and only stopped by the wire
More garden pictures: the wild columbine is starting, the aspen borers progress, somehow the birds didn't eat all my sweet ciciley and it's about to flower-- but as you see they loved the borage right beside it. Apparently the ducks are the only animal that can kill borage.

A vibrant young stand of lambs quarters
A garden box full of mixed brassica greens: leafy cabbages, mustard greens, and pak chois in many colours of green, chartreuse, and red
A clump of oregano growing up through the grass
A young orchard with geese grazing in the evening light
I feel bad killing plants to eat them, but lambs quarters spanakopita is delightful and greens and an egg do amazing things to a ramen brick
Then an evening watching mixed herds of dinosaurs graze while other dinosaurs swoop singing through the air 🌱 🦕 🍜 🪿

Contraption of dairy crates with wood set over it and frost cloth over that in the garden
Contraption of dairy crates with wood set over it and frost cloth over that in the garden
Last night frost was not impossible, so the tomatoes got frost cloth contraptions.
First thing that happened is Little Bear the cat ran through them at full speed tearing holes, just like he does when I change bedsheets.
No frost but it keeps dogs off too so it stays. 🌱

A flame point cat sits on the also of a human on a dandelion-flecked lawn
The heart shaped leaves of violets, and one white flower, poke through wood chips beside a treetrunk
Several small tomatoes: a red one with black on its shoulders, two green ones with a neon green blush, and three red ones with gold striping.
Today Hazard was my garden helper. I discovered a surprise clump of violets. And a nice handful of tomato harvest from indoor plants: sweet baby jade, ruby slippers, and blaue zimmertomate. Yellow brick road is just starting to ripen. 🌱🍅

Two rows of dairy crates upside down in a garden with wilting feathery plants laid out on top of them
Put some scentless chamomile out to dry so when planting is done I can try dyeing with it. That's my "oops I didn't harden them off" tomatoes under the crates, they provide a nice shelter as the littles adapt.

Nursery trays under lights with tiny tips of seedlings starting to poke up through the soil
A floor totally covered with flats of pepper plants
A straight line of yellow daffodils growing out of bare soil. The line leads to a well.
Chickpeas are up, I need it to warm up soon I can plant peppers, my waterline is well marked. 🌱

Lower garden beds almost all prepped, but I still need to move the shavings for the path... And do the far back field. 🌱

A bright yellow daffodil pops out of some Sidcup mulch, surrounded by smaller yellow and blue bulb flowers
Some pale yellow nearly trumpet-shaped flowers and a single unfurling green leaf grow from the ends of an otherwise bare haskap (also known as honeyberry) branch
Clusters of buds swell into round green incipient flowers on a plum branch
Small, still tightly-closed apple blossom buds inside a corona of brand new leaves grow from spurs on an apple tree branch
Today's flowers and incipient flowers: daffodil, haskap, plum, apple. 🌱

Some snow under a pile of straw, with green grass growing in the background
A bowl with artichoke hearts, brisket, and young dandelion heart rosette salad
A garden field stretching out in the distance, about a quarter tilled. Fence and a human cast long shadows over it.
Grass verges into a muddy dry-pond bottom with goose footprints in it
Today's garden walk found some snow under a pile of straw (gotta mulch judiciously here, insulation keeps cold in), the first dandelions for salad which were so sweet and not-bitter I was disappointed, tilled a quarter of the upper field first pass, and saw the pond dried up.

A row of crocus flowers poking out of bare earth
A muddy area of bare soil fenced in, outside the fence is grass and trees
Weird bubbly red things peeking out of a dark brown gnarled lump in the soil
An expanse of tilled soil ending in a tangle of branches, a fallen tree, and two standing dead trees
Today's garden walk: my trick of planting marker bulbs where tiny apple seedlings are seems to be working, pigs cleared this nice bit of garden for me last year, rhubarb looks like an alien every spring, did more tilling and really need to deal with those branches now. 🌱

A tattooed thigh clad in black shorts
A big round leaf over half the size of someone's palm on a happy looking plant under lights inside
A small clump of grass next to an impression made by a piece of plywood set on the ground. The plywood has been moved to show three foot long grass rhizomes traveling from the small clump under the board
Several flats of large happy looking plants outside a patio door. The plants are mostly tomato and pepper
Today's gardening was warm enough to do in shorts. Body said no wheelbarrowing and just a little tilling (yay for rear-tine tillers). Tobacco is growing huge fast, I was reminded of the meaning of grassroots, it's hardening off month for the first starts 🌱

Are there any short season or cold winter garden feeds here? I know this is the quiet time of year for them.

I haven't seen a gardening (focus on southern ontario, or new york zones USDA zones 4-5) group here yet, but if there is one, gimme a poke. It'd be great to have a gaggle of gardeners to chatter at this coming season, and ogle pics of your bounty. :)
