Neonicotinoid Insecticides: The Unseen Threat to Male Fertility In today's episode we're examining the hidden health risks associated with Neonicotinoid Insecticides, the world's most widely used class of pesticides. Neonics are used extensively in agriculture, leading to inevitable occupational and environmental contamination, including detectable levels in food and water. Since these chemicals are applied systemically, they are absorbed throughout the plant tissues, making them very difficult—if not impossible—to remove completely by washing produce. Recent systematic reviews analyzing 21 animal studies consistently show that neonic exposure negatively impacts male reproductive health. Specifically, studies reveal compromised sperm quality (count, motility, viability, morphology), damage to testicular tissue, hormonal disruption (lowered serum testosterone), and severe oxidative stress. These consistent findings, derived primarily from rodent models, constitute a clear and urgent public health concern, emphasizing the critical need for dedicated human epidemiological studies.
