Figure 3 in Shi et al. (2025): "The survival probability of Gelis agilis females was studied in microcosmos arenas that differed in complexity, and in which provisioning of food and cocoons was (a) temporally or (b) spatially separated. In single dish arenas with 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 compartments, respectively (a), provisioning of food and cocoons was alternated every 48 h. In two-dish arenas with 1, 4 or 9 compartments, respectively, connected by a tube (b), food was offered in one dish and cocoons in the other. In the two-dish arenas, food and cocoons were replaced every 48 h, but were both provided simultaneously. The dotted lines depict median survival, and the coloured shaded areas represent the 95% confidence interval for the survival curves. The number of replicates is 10 per arena type in (a) and 30 in (b). In (b), the arrows on the x-axis represent the median longevity of females provided only with food and no hosts (experiment 2.2)."

Why are we seeing so many butterflies in Ireland this year? Improved weather conditions this summer have led to butterfly populations recovering after the crash in numbers in 2024

Neat little wasp with muscular hind legs :)

A tiny parasitoid wasp, Ormyrus nitidulus, climbs a pond sedge leaf in a garden pond. She is about 5mm long, with a hunched posture and a sharply pointed end to the abdomen. She is metallic blue, blue-green, and gold, with brilliant red eyes, and strongly embossed and patterned gastric tergites. Her larvae parasitise the larvae of the wasp responsible for Knopper galls in English oak trees.

Clytus arietis: The wasp that lives inside another bug and takes it over is called a #parasitoidwasp. These wasps lay their eggs on or inside the bodies of other arthropods, eventually causing the death of these hosts.

If billionaire donors are the wasps, the GOP will be dead soon.

Can't wait! 💀

Experimental design of: Temporal snapshot of parasitoid wasp communities on three flowering plant species and implications for the rosy apple aphid regulation (Dysaphis plantaginea) in apple orchards

The three tested plants Capsella bursa-pastoris, Veronica persica and Vicia sativa were intercropped with apple trees in two experimental apple orchards (eight replicate plots per treatment in a randomized block design). Bare soil was used as negative control. Each plot comprised two apple trees framed by 2.5 m2 of one of the tested plants or bare soil. The two orchards were 250 m apart.

Side view of a tiny translucent white, slightly orange wasp with bright yellow eyes that have a dark purple spot where you are looking straight down the ommatidia. She sits on a blade of grass where, at this magnification individual plant cells are just about visible and some blurry white spots in the foreground, which are the stomata. The wasp is licking up some sugar water which I put there so she is occupied and won't fly away. The background is a blur of shades of petrol.

A view down a commercial strawberry polytunnel, with a long row of lush flowering strawberry plants, with some fruits. The plants grow in long, narrow coir bags (not visible) on a sort of bar at human shoulder-height. The ground underneath and between the rows is a mixture of bare soil and "weeds", i.e. non-intentional wild plants of different species.

Over the last 18 months or so, we have been exploring the relationship between landscape and insect-related ecosystem services on strawberry farms. Let me tell you about something we found... [1/]
