It's #spidersaturday, so I wanted to talk about one of my favourite spider! :D

This bulky palearctic spider has a smooth & velvet-like look and is famous for the ladybug-like colors of its males, while females have a more classic almost fully black body. Size: around 1cm of body length for the male, 1,5cm for the female Time period: Holocene (present day) Conservation status: Least concern to Endangered The animals drawn are a female and a male ladybird spiders. The female looks like a heavy bulky black spider, while the male have bright red colors on the posterior half of its body, making it look a bit like a ladybug.

Like all jumping spiders they have a compact body, big eyes facing upfront and short but strong legs. This species has a strong green color on its back and is the sole spider species known to be truly herbivorous.

My first drawing of a jumping spider for years ! I choosed Bagheera kiplingi for the occasion, a species from Mexico & Central America AND the only known true herbivorous spider !

Grey-brown mottled spider, with a white stripe along the back of its head and abdomen - on each side, first and second legs held close together, on a green bamboo leaf. Little beady black eyes peer out from underneath hairs - and the sides of the head have pale, mutton-chop like downward tufts.

Same spider again, only this time the front three legs on one side are bunched together and drawn towards the mouth.

Same spider - with front legs on both sides folded together in front, like a human folding (too many) arms.

In case #spiderSaturday is also a thing - a rather cuddly Nursery Web Spider, Pisaura mirabilis. Not sure *what* it was doing with its front legs. Indicating that it wanted a hug? Aww.

I love taking pictures of spiders at night, when they are active hunting and looking for mates and all.
Its also fairly easy to spot them if you have a good light source, like a head lamp or a flash light.

The white structure at the back of the pedipalps is a useful ID feature for these guys.
