St. Peter, Charney Bassett

Some suggest that the carving depicts Alexander the Great being carried to heaven by griffins, whereas Pevsner disagrees. Guidebook suggests 5 different options but perhaps could represent man being beset by vice or temptation.
Early to mid 12th century.
A view down the long lavatorium in the cloister of Gloucester Cathedral. A shelf plus basin in front of it extends the complete length towards a stained glass window at the end. The ceiling is elaborately carved in a series of interlinking fan-vaulted arches. On the right, seven pairs of stained glass windows can be seen, each one with three lights.
Lavatorium in Gloucester Cathedral has 14th C origins as facilities for monks in earlier abbey to wash.
The long evocative stretch of #SundayStonework on north of cloisters features elaborately wonderful #MarchArches + later #StainedGlassSunday.
And Harry Potter + Half Blood Prince has a scene here.
Image of a woman on a 13th C stone slab, with some indistinct probably Norman inscription along one side.

One side of a large rectangular coarse granite stone, partly broken off at the top, originally the base of a cross. It has linear markings, within which is an inscription that reads 'Doniert rogavit pro anima' in Latin. Around the base are daffodils in flower.

One of my favourite parts of the cathedral. I always find myself pausing here and forgetting I'm in Auxerre at that moment.

#SundayStonework Fabulous sedilia; Pevsner lists this as one of the original C14th fittings, but then admits that it has been much restored, on no fewer than three occasions since then.
Scott apparently lengthened the pinnacles, which does give a spectacular effect! @portaspeciosa.bsky.social
#SundayStonework Skirting around Exeter's much praised pulpitum.
I warmed to the immaculate fire bucket, shining red beneath the candles.
Beyond, right, two of Exeter's peerless piers - there's so much elegance combined with strength in the delicately repeated verticals. @chartresfi.bsky.social

A lovely annunciation scene at All Saints, Oakham for #mothersday even if the angel does look rather like he's launching his scroll at Mary!
On the left is the coronation of the Virgin and on the right is the expulsion of Adam and Eve, the capitals at Oakham are all rather 'busy'.
