Pupa the size of a grain of barley, glowing slightly from within and revealing the outlines of hundreds of small cells and a darker branching pattern that might be the circulatory system of the metamorphosing fly.

Puparium of a walnut husk maggot fly (Rhagoletis suavis), backlit to show innards. Was wondering whether I could find parasitized ones but I don't think the light is strong enough. #diptera #flies #tephritidae #coptera

Close-up of the puparium of the walnut husk maggot fly (Rhagoletis suavis). The puparium is just the hardened skin of the larval stage so you can still see the segments. The pupa will develop inside. #tephritidae #diptera #fly #insect

Extreme close-up of a brightly colored tephritid fly, mounted on a pin against a deep green background. The fly is vivid orange throughout its body, with a translucent amber tone that appears almost glowing. The large compound eyes are an intense metallic green, displaying fine hexagonal facets. Its wings are semi-transparent and glossy, with striking brown banded patterns and iridescent reflections catching the light in rainbow hues. The fly's thorax and abdomen are covered in short, sparse setae (hairs), and its legs are fine and spiny, matching the orange body color. The proboscis and antennae are detailed and sharply visible. The fly is pinned in a natural posture with wings elevated slightly, creating a strong profile view. The lighting enhances the contrast between its natural color and the dark, smooth background. Every vein in the wing and segment of the leg is clearly captured in this high-resolution macrophotograph.

A #Tephritidae of some kind. These can be some of the most damaging agricultural pests in the world. The color is natural and my camera struggled with how bright orange it was. Not what most people picture when they think of flies.
