The mute swan (Cygnus olor) natural range includes Western Europe and parts of Asia (mainly Central). It has been introduced to USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. Its habitats includes lakes, slow moving rivers, canals and sometimes salt or brackish water. It breeds close to these locations and feeds on plants such as stonewort, water crow-foot, hornwort, grasses, algae and more. The species will also eat invertebrates and from my own personal experience it loves sunflower hearts! They also like bread from humans but it is not good for them (so please do not give them bread). It is one of the World's largest and heaviest flying birds (9-11.5kg). It is not actually mute but is called that because it makes less sound than other swans. They are usually lifelong monogamous but occasionally 'divorce,' or seek a new mate if one of a pair dies. Black swans are native to Australia with introductions to some countries such as the UK and New Zealand. This species (Cynus atratus) is of Least Concern on the IUCN Red List with a stable population trend due to its very large range. It is a waterbird that needs a habitat of wetlands, freshwater and brackish/saltwater lakes. It can also be found on ornamental lakes. They breed in large nests (made of reeds and grasses) close to water and are monogamous. Both parents incubate the eggs (taking turns) and look after the chicks. Black swans are herbivorous and will eat algae, water plants and grass. They are also lifelong monogamous.

The Coal Tit (Periparus ater) is classed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List and has a globally stable population trend. Their UK Conservation Status is Green. it consumes seeds in the colder months (it is a regular visitor to bird tables and loves sunflower hearts and peanuts) and invertebrates such as arachnids and insects in the summer. This species has a very large range across Europe, Asia and tips of Northern Africa. The coal tits main habitats include woodlands (especially coniferous and mixed) as well as parks and gardens.

The redshank is distinguished by its long bright orange legs.This species has a very large range in Europe, Asia, Africa and even non breeding in small areas in Australia. Northern populations tend to migrate. It is classed as globally Least Concern but with a decreasing population trend and is an Amber listed bird in the UK due to large declines in numbers caused by habitat loss and climate change. It will nest grasses in salt and freshwater marshlands and eats invertebrates by probing their bills into muddy substrates.

Projects for protection from 1995 to 2023 (for example) have resulted in a drastic increase in their numbers in the UK. These are one of my favourite birds of prey due to their elegance and graceful flight. They are protected in the UK by Law.
