It is highly unusual to see a GCG out of the water in this way.
Looks very likely it was prospecting a nest site. With one pair already incubating, a second nest would be amazing after many years of sp site absence.

A heron stood in a dark and fast flowing river stalking its prey. It was dark and a bit wet at the time and the noise of the river added to the atmosphere.
