A long, dark insect on a wet rock. It is black with long feelers.
Another view of the stonefly.
Spotted what I think are Black Stoneflies (Austroperla cyrene) at the Rob Roy Glacier Track, Wanaka, New Zealand on 1 Jan 2026. They were moving on rocks near a stream.

3/4 We assessed if #eDNA can capture the temporal changes of #Ephemeroptera, #Plecoptera, #Trichoptera, and #Diptera.
We found pronounced, cyclic phenological trends in most groups: the communities diverged from spring to summer and then in fall gradually returned closer to the spring state.
🎄 #InsectAdvent Day 10 is #Plecoptera day!
#FunFact: Stoneflies are a sign of pristine rivers with healthy ecosystems. Their aquatic nymphs live under stones in fast-flowing highly-oxygenated streams and can take months or even years to mature.

A large dark gray insect with intricately veined, dark gray wings. It has long black antennae, big black eyes, and dark legs and is resting on a floor of pale gray stone or concrete or something.
Was just reminded that in 2019 I found this dead stonefly on the floor of the lobby of my then office building
