Of the flies I saw today, this one is my favourite. It's the ngaro tara or three-lined Hover Fly (*Helophilus seelandicus*), a New Zealand endemic species.

I like the sleek colour pattern. It would not look out of place on a coverable sports car.

The garden is coming to life! Just saw and missed my first Dark Edged #Beefly (Bombylius major). However did catch a lovely Eupeodes luniger #Hoverfly on the pear blossom.

A close-up of a wing of Merodon equestris, the Narcissus bulb fly, a hover fly that resembles a bumble bee. One of the veins (or lines) in the wing has a squiggle or bend.

Seems to be present in every species of Eristalini and Merodontini I've personally observed. Not present in Milesiini or Syrphinae from what I've seen.

Haven't photographed a live hover fly recently, but here's a Merodon equestris specimen I worked with:
