An Egyptian goose standing on short-mown green grass in an urban park in early spring, facing right toward a single yellow daffodil in bloom. The bird has pale buff-cream plumage, a distinctive chestnut-brown eye patch, and a dark chest spot. A wild-grass meadow margin with dried stems and fresh green growth fills the background. Notes on the description The bird is an Egyptian goose (Alopochen aegyptiaca), identifiable by its chestnut “spectacles” around the eyes and the dark patch on its breast. It is a common sight in London parks — the species has successfully colonised much of the capital since its 17th-century introduction from Africa. The daffodil alongside it places the scene firmly in early spring, which aligns with late March in the UK. Egyptian geese typically begin laying eggs from late March into April, so this bird may well be nesting nearby.
So that’ll be #spring then. #Daffodil 🌼 🇪🇬 Egyptian goose. #BirdsUK 🪶 #RegentsCanal
A white Mute Swan sitting on a large, mounded nest built from straw and dried reeds. The nest rests on a metal mesh floating platform anchored in dark water, positioned against a weathered stone wall covered with patches of moss and lichen. The swan is in a resting/incubating posture with its neck tucked back, its orange-and-black bill visible. Small green aquatic plants grow at the left edge of the platform. The stone wall in the background is composed of large rectangular blocks, aged and damp.

The photo captures a female mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos) perched boldly on a white rooftop railing, surveying an urban cityscape. Her plumage is the classic mottled brown, with each feather showing strong contrast from buff to dark brown… a natural camouflage pattern perfect for hiding while nesting. Her bill is orange with characteristic dark black markings, and her legs and feet are a vivid orange-red, both reliable identification features of the species. She appears alert and upright, her posture suggesting she’s quite comfortable at height.
Saw this female #mallard duck scouting my apartment terrace this morning for a nesting spot.
This can be an ecological trap … once ducklings hatch, they cannot safely descend to the water below
:-( I may need to discourage her.
