Photo of two Mining Bees (probably of the genus Andrena), on bare soil with stones of various sizes. We are looking at them from above and, in the case of the Bee near the top left corner of the image, a little from the front. The aforementioned Bee is facing towards the rear of the second one, who is facing towards the bottom right corner of the image. Both have blackish heads with large compound eyes, brown, hairy thoraxes, and abdomens which are dark with pale bands around them (largely obscured by the wings folded back across the bodies).

On a small mound of bare, stony soil beside the path leading to the Jon Baldwin Hide were several insect burrows, plus several solitary Wasps and #Bees – including these two Mining Bees (genus Andrena, I think). Brandon Marsh #NaturePhotography thread, post #14. #Insects #Hymenoptera #UKWildlife 🌿

Two realistic paintings (spicebush swallowtail on top, polyphemus moth on bottom) in brown frames. The pieces are sitting on a distressed white tabletop. There are hints of wood tone showing throughout the white surface, which you can also see behind the insects. This helps to indicate that they have been painted on clear glass, and look like they are floating in the middle of the frames.

Spotted on the Winter Honeysuckle here… I think the pupal case of a hoverfly, Syrphidae, the larvae of which will get stuck into the aphids.

The Bee That Everyone Wants to Save My neighbour has 50 hives, the road has 30 more. That's 4 million honeybees, and not one of them is the bee that actually needs saving.

Trombidiidae, the velvet mite—it’s huge for a mite. I wouldn’t have expected to see one this early in the spring. It’s quite conspicuous in the moss. The even smaller larvae can bite people, though I’ve never experienced that myself.
