Sunny but very windy on #PaullHolmeStrays today.
Last few waterfowl are still around - down to c120 Wigeon now and a lone Pink-footed Goose on the main stray. First Ruff of the year was by the lighthouses - and just as I was leaving, the first Chiffchaff started singing!

Nice to see #PaullHolmeStrays featured!
Not sure who the local was though - the Roe Deer have no problems with the gullies - they're often out on the saltmarsh - and sometimes right next to the Humber.
I've even seen them out on the mudbanks IN the Humber

A Russian White-fronted Goose
Just a few of the hundreds of Greylags
Probably well over 1k geese on #PaullHolmeStrays today. And for once some are on the Main Stray offering great views - including some White-fronted Geese.
Several hundred Greylags, and several hundred more Pink-footed. Loved it.
A few Snipe flying around too.

#PWC2025 was not so good - 114 birds for 137 points,
#PaullHolmeStrays was quiet - American Golden Plover was the best bird (not seen by me). Only ticks for me were Grey Partridge and a surprise Purple Sand.
Easily my best patch bird was an American Wigeon at Newton Garth.

That'd be a nice addition to the #PaullHolmeStrays list. It's not far away!
A photo showing the mudflats and Saltmarsh at Paull Holme Strays
Apparently it was World Saltmarsh Day yesterday, so here's a photo looking over the #PaullHolmeStrays mud to the saltmarsh.
Not a lot about this lunchtime, but I did see a Short-eared Owl flying over the adjacent farmland.
Normally more of a winter bird here, so nice to see!
#ukbirding
A very short walk today at #PaullHolmeStrays, the Tawny Owl still in the same roosting spot, a single Avocet on the inlet, a dozen or so Brent Geese and a #PWC2025 tick of Short-eared Owl. No Wheatear today.
Also a Common Seal near the car park.
A Tawny Owls asleep in an Ivy-covered Tree
Windy lunchtime walk on #PaullHolmeStrays, but one that brought 4 #pwc2025 ticks. Whimbrel, Wheatear, Yellow Wagtail and this sleeping Tawny Owl.
That'll do.

Short walk today at #PaullHolmeStrays.
A nice walk starting in the woods where I found A Mistle Thrush (nfy) and then out onto the Strays where I found my first Patch Tick of the year - a Purple Sandpiper tucked into the rocks by the Humber.
Also a single Peacock butterfly.

View over the inlet and salt marsh at Paull Holme Strays
Definite spring-like walk at #PaullHolmeStrays this lunchtime. Waterfowl numbers dropping, singing Skylarks, and at the last minute the first Chiffchaff of the year.
Also the first Butterfly (Peacock) of the year too.
#yorkshirebirding
First lunchtime walk at #PaullHolmeStrays on the year yesterday - a freezing walk (compared to my last few...) produced a species not seen at all last year in the form of 2 White-fronted Geese.
Also a Marsh Harrier hunting over the Saltmarsh before crossing the Humber.

Fog over the main stray
Fog over the salt marsh from the bird hide
Odd weather for birding, but I actually enjoyed it.
Walked the 5km round trip to the bird hide at #PaullHolmeStrays, not something I often do.
Very eerie with waders (inc Greenshank!) calling in the fog. But also a flock of Corn Bunting appeared out of nowhere for a patch tick.

Merry Christmas Everyone!
I'm celebrating at the in-laws, where I've just seen a Great Northern Diver flying down the Humber. Nice patch tick and first since I started listing properly.

Quieter walk today at #PaullHolmeStrays, but I love it when the Humber is calm.
Finally added Yellow-legged Gull for #PWC2024.
Gulls, especially immatures are a struggle. I need a good view and a bit of time to work out what's what.
Wasn't as much of a problem in Leeds!

Patch ticks like buses.
6 months since my last at #PaullHolmeStrays, then 2 in 5 minutes! First, my first ever Little Auk (anywhere!), even gave me a little loop so I got a longer look. Then, 8 Gannets flying down river in 2s & 3s.
Really glad I decided to brave the elements!

A wet walk at Paull Holme Strays
Been a busy time, but we've managed some birding over the last week.
A great walk at #TophillLow on Wednesday with 59 species, Red-Crested Pochard was NFY.
Then an hour or so at #PaullHolmeStrays yesterday, in the rain. Sadly, no sign of the male Hen Harrier I'd seen last week.
#YorkshireBirding
Many, many hundreds (thousands?) of Pink-footed Geese flying into or over #PaullHolmeStrays this morning.
Meanwhile the House Martin nest on the new house is still occupied. With parents regularly visiting to feed young. Need to get a move on guys!
#ukbirding #yorkshirebirding
First post-holiday walk at #PaullHolmeStrays this lunch.
Nothing too unusual. But as I was walking back crow alerted me to a female Merlin low over the Main Stray, which I thought was NFY, but turns out I saw one on 1st January!
Also found another winged Roesel's Bush-cricket!
#YorkshireBirding
Haven't been onto #PaullHolmeStrays since I got back from Cyprus, but I see autumn has arrived whilst we were away. Not just the weather, hundreds of Pink-footed Geese overhead this morning.

I bumped into the guy doing these surveys. The irony being I've seen fewer Redshank on #PaullHolmeStrays this year than any other time I can remember.

Kestrel on a yellow signpost
Nice hour on #PaullHolmeStrays this lunchtime. Nothing amazing, but a Greenshank and a Red Kite provided a bit of interest. Plenty of Blackwits and a single Barwit.
Thousands of other waders on the Humber mud, but too distant to ID.
Also nice to see 2 recently fledged Kestrels.
