The Giver’s Disappearance

I gave until the edges came undone.
A scaffold built for others to ascend.
My name grew faint beneath what I had done.

Each morning broke with gauntlets to be run.
A silent pact I never chose to bend.
I gave until the edges came undone.

Their needs, like tides, eclipsed my only sun.
No space to trace the self I could defend.
My name grew faint beneath what I had done.

The mirror held a stranger I would shun.
Feigned smiles without the strength to pretend.
I gave until the edges came undone.

They praised the strength, the grace, the constant one.
But never asked what I might need to mend.
My name grew faint beneath what I had done.

Now duty speaks in voices not my own.
A life I built but do not comprehend.
I gave until the edges came undone.

My name grew faint beneath what I had done.

The news pours mass genocide
into my mourning coffee.
Somewhere children try to hide

bright, scraped-kneed and argus-eyed
with nowhere safe to flee.
The news pours genocide

powdered buildings, bodies fried,
earth baked like hard-cracked toffee
somewhere children try to hide,

ego never satisfied
they keep serving them to Donnie.
The news pours mass genocide

like hydrogen peroxide
propelling calamity
somewhere children try to hide.

Remember the crucified,
seek peace for the Irani
as news pours mass genocide,
somewhere children try to hide.

5.4.2026 - A Mathematic Proof For Pain

What perfect signs could I use to explain
this howling mass of signals, deaf and blind?
I lack a mathematic proof for pain.

At three a.m it rattles through my brain,
that if I just tried hard enough I'd find
the perfect signs I could use to explain.

So I pick up my chalk and try again
to scratch a trap for screams to be confined.
I’ll craft a mathematic proof for pain.

For all I've raked myself against this vein,
somewhere in these depths, yet to be mined,
lie perfect signs I could use to explain.

When the calculations all are plain,
they can't deny it once it's been defined.
I need a mathematic proof for pain.

But every time that fatal gap remains,
between the universes of our minds.
What perfect signs could I use to explain
there is no mathematic proof for pain?

#napowrimo day 5. Written between 3 and 5 a.m., because sometimes it's like that.

I'm still not sure if I'm capable of writing a villanelle I like, but this one comes closest.

A. A. Rubin
Never Ever Walk the Leadoff Batter
"Never ever walk the leadoff batter"
Daddy explains as I watch my first game These are the things that really do matter.
The high school playoffs, I am the catcher-To the pitcher, my dad's words I declaim,
"Never ever walk the leadoff batter."
About the game we always could chatter;
From other issues wed often refrain.
These are the things that really do matter.
The Sox, cursed, never won when it mattered.
Hed yell at the screen and loudly exclaim,
"Never ever walk the leadoff batter!"
Dad died in '03, they won the year after-Elation! It (nearly) covered the pain.
These are the things that really do matter.
Up in the stands, I pass on to my daughter, And to my son who bears Daddy's name,
"Never, ever walk the leadoff batter."
These are the things that really do matter.

I only want you to hold me tight
wrapped up together in our bed
we'll keep each other safe tonight

make every nightmare go away
alone they get viciously bad
I only want you to hold me tight

I promise you I'm here always
though I can sometimes be misread
we'll keep each other safe tonight

though neither of us is quite okay
it breaks my heart to see you sad
I only want to hold you tight

sometimes life is endlessly gray
don't look back, only ahead
we'll keep each other safe tonight

if this was too much, I wouldn't have stayed
wrapped up together in our bed
I only want you to hold me tight
we'll keep each other safe tonight

A powerful example of the villanelle form, where repetition becomes devotion.

The refrain “Ireland, Ireland!” echoes like a vow.

What do you think repetition does here, lament, prayer, or battle cry?

All things will pass, the rocks are here to stay --
The atoms from the perished stars compressed,
They witness things that come and go away.

The blossoms of the past are just their dust today.
Breathe out, lean against them, rest --
All things will pass, the rocks are here to stay,

The mountains that add tears to clay,
They keep the weight that trickled off your chest.
They witness things that come and go away,

For eons, spinning inside the Milky Way,
They know one single truth the best:
All things will pass, the rocks are here to stay.

Watching the forms appear and then decay,
They know there's an end to every quest--
They witness things that come and go away.

So, try, however hard you may,
You will not change what they have long professed:
All things will pass, the rocks are here to stay.
They witness things that come and go away.

I lose my balance, stumble; fall.
I struggle to my knees and rise erect.
I'm dizzy now, I lean against the wall.

I hear my lover's siren call
And fight against the urge to interject.
I lose my balance, stumble; fall.

Not ready yet to rise, floor-bound, I stall;
My gaze fixed where the sight lines intersect.
I'm dizzy now, I lean against the wall.

My lover calls, we're late, now, to the ball:
Get ready, dear, we need to leave direct!
I lose my balance, stumble; fall.

I push against the floor and start to crawl.
The room is spinning fast-- I genuflect.
I'm dizzy now, I lean against the wall.

Oh, help me, how can I forestall
This vertigo? The evening's wrecked!
I lose my balance, stumble; fall.
I'm dizzy now, I lean against the wall.
