Photograph of a black morph Eastern gray squirrel standing on a branch with out of focus trees, branches and a grey hazy sky in the background. The squirrel is facing to the left in profile with its tail resting along its back and it is holding a small bundle of spring leaves and leaf buds in its fore paws which are held close to its muzzle. Gray squirrels typically have grey and brown fur with white abdomen and chest fur, a long bushy tail, a triangular head with dark eyes, proportionally large ears, a typical rodent muzzle, long, black whiskers, hand-like fore paws, and claws that allow the squirrel to cling to vertical surfaces. However, this is a melanistic gray squirrel sometime referred to a black morph of black squirrel and, as the name suggests, have black or dark black-brown fur all over their bodies.
Melanistic squirrel (aka "black" squirrel or "black morph" or "black" gray squirrel) tucks into its spring salad of fresh leaves and buds. Nom, nom!
