Ive kept #EternalLoveOfDream on my special “I know I’ll love this” list (like #Yanxi was before last year) so I have something to look forward to if I’m ever struggling to find a drama to watch

#minglan 73 eps, 45 minutes per episode #zhaoliying as Ming Lan and #fengshaofeng as Gu Tingye.

Excellent 4.8 stars, it was a little too long and compared to #yanxi it was slower.

I appreciated all the historical references and details in this cdrama. The inter-family conflicts were done well.

It’s definitely got a bit of #Yanxi energy about it (with harem type scenarios, murders & subterfuge, etc), but much more light hearted for the most part - plus it’s a reverse-harem in this case

You could watch it parallel with #Yanxi 🙂

I’ve already recommended #EmpressesinthePalace - but as it’s a classic like #Yanxi or #NirvanaInFire (ie, a drama you’re supposed to hear about from others), I’ll try to come up with something else…

I rated #PrisonerOfBeauty higher than A Dream of Splendor, but tbh I think ADoS has more of my heart… plus I saw one of the sets in Hengdian!!! 😝

It’s still amazing to me you were in the #Yanxi grounds to be honest! It must add an extra dimension to your viewing experience

They acted together again in the business drama #FightingYouth, where he plays her onscreen boyfriend (in a much more jovial role than in #Yanxi)

#Yanxi & #Minglan are classics, but as they are longer productions you have to have the time to really give them the appreciation they deserve

Both are strong heroines but in very different ways: in #Yanxi Wu Jinyan plays a similar role to #TheDouble; whereas Zhao Liying’s #Minglan is much subtler

#Empresses is super drama 🙂 - it’s definitely up there with #Yanxi & #Minglan for well made compelling historical dramas

Her other dramas are a bit mixed in terms of quality - I personally loved her in the business drama #FightingYouth, but not everyone liked it (though I did! - & her husband - who she met when he played the bad prince in #Yanxi - plays her onscreen boyfriend)

The criteria is simply for dramas older than 2025, so #Yanxi definitely fits 👍

I’m so glad others have appreciated this gem - It’s a marvellous drama! I’ve rewatched certain episodes over & over - & Wei Yingluo is without doubt one of my all time favourite characters ☺️

#Yanxi has a happy ending overall - not to spoil it too much, but she gets together with the Emperor (despite everything!), & gets her revenge on those who deserve it

The last eps just play out the natural history of the Emperor dying (of old age or old wounds, I can’t remember now); it’s not 😭

I still haven’t watched RRLitP

I’ve seen the first few episodes - but perhaps because I came to it after #Empresses & #Yanxi (& so had already had my fill of harem stories), it didn’t immediately grab me - plus I’ve read #Ruyi is the bleakest of the 3

But I will get around to it eventually 👍

#Minglan is slice of life - whereas #Yanxi is more plot driven

Slice of life dramas put emphasis on small little asides & details about daily life experiences

Whereas more plot-heavy dramas focus on the story over everything else

#Minglan has a mixture of slice of life & plot

Yes, #EmpressesinthePalace is the real OG historical or palace drama (at least for the post 2010 era). It’s also still addictively watchable, as is #Yanxi (both are faves of mine!)

I dropped both #Ashes & #EternalLove, but loved #EternalLoveofDream. I didn’t finish #PrincessAgents but loved #ShenLi

I don’t agree. If the drama in focussed on a strong FL (as it is in #Yanxi, #Empresses, #Minglan, etc), then it’s natural for there to be female antagonists too (though in fact there are both male & female antagonists in these dramas).

#Minglan for sure had a malicious concubine - but I only vaguely remember the ones in more recent dramas like #Destined & #Blossom. I know Chinese censorship had a crackdown on harem dramas after #Yanxi so perhaps they’re not quite as prominent as before, but I’m sure they’re still in many dramas.

There are more malicious concubines in harem dramas like #Yanxi & #EmpressesinthePalace of course, but kdramas are full of scheming malicious men & women too 😅

Oh cool! They’re both such good dramas, so it fits - but I wasn’t sure if you meant #Yanxi because you haven’t got around to watching it yet.

I also dropped it several times at the start, but honestly once I was hooked I was totally absorbed & couldn’t believe I had almost missed this treasure!

I absolutely love #Yanxi, but #Minglan is a much more humanistic portrayal of human relationship & love, & it is a more intimate drama for me.

Obviously Wang Xingyue is the better actor, both in terms of model looks/charisma & acting skills. #TheDouble also owed much of its success to the impact of Wu Jinyan’s return to acting & her reprise of the vengeance dynamic she enjoyed in #Yanxi

But I think #TheGlory shines on its own terms

Although the love-line with Fuca doesn’t have a happy ending, #Yanxi has a happy ending in terms of the marriage love-line

But for sure, I wouldn’t watch #Yanxi for a happy romance! (similarly #EmpressesinthePalace)

For happy romance endings I would look at dramas like #TheStoryofMinglan,

It was definitely in my mind, but in terms of being “compelling” I thought an average viewer would find #Yanxi more “compelling” (in the sense of gripping the audience from the get-go). #Minglan takes a little warming up to - & there’s still a category at the end of the challenge it could fit… 😉

Yes! #Empresses is the OG of palace dramas, with #Yanxi (and possibly #Ruyi, though I haven’t seen it yet) a close second

Another one to check out is #LegendofLuZhen (with Zhao Liying as the fl) - it’s not at the same level as these, but it’s still worth a watch for palace drama aficionados

I like the list, but I wouldn’t put #PerfectMatch on in the background - there’s some angsty #Yanxi like meat on those rom-com bones!

Something more along the lines of #TheBestThing or #BeginAgain (2024) is nice to have on in the background while doing chores 🙂
