Cavenham Heath is again wonderfully wet after all the rain - which has now stopped, with a rainbow - the River Lark in full spate.
The rookery is beginning to expand out onto the heath from the birch wood.

Wonderful Woodlark song on #CavenhamHeath; love their stripey cap & bold eyestripe. A Redpoll seemed keen to feed on the ground.
2 mysteries: who put flints along this trunk (off beaten track) & who made these numerous holes in recently exposed sand? #MyWalk #BirdsSeenIn2024 1/2

Haws, tightly furled Alder catkins and Teasels all encased in hoar frost on the banks of the River Lark, still and silent but for the twitter of feeding flocks of tits & finches & the occasional shriek of a Water Rail. #CavenhamHeath #WestSuffolk #Icklingham #wildflowerhour 2/3

Today the sun never broke through the freezing fog, leaving the vegetation in the grip of the hoar frost all day. Proper winter!

Gudgeon also abundant in the bed of the River Lark at Temple Bridge, and I never remember seeing quite so many Rudd, Roach & Dace here before. And one huge Chub.

Minnows are spectacularly abundant in the River Lark at Temple Bridge, including many in full breeding condition and swarms of fry. I never tire of this beautiful fish.

A few lovely banks of Water Starwort have survived between the flowing tresses of Bur-reed and the reed beds, despite the algae.
And I always love to see the startling red roots of the riverside Alders.

Looks like a Powdery Brittlegill (Russula parazurea) & could it be Lactarius decipiens Milkcap? And a lone Sulphur Tuft (Hypholoma fasciculare)? & mass of Clustered Bonnets (Mycena inclinata)? All on Tuddenham Heath. #CavenhamHeath #Suffolk #Fungi #Breckland #Fungus #Mycology 3/6

On Tuddenham Heath, Clouded Funnel (Clitocybe nebularis)?, Blusher (Amanita rubescens) & could the lower one be False Death cap (Amanita citrina)?

At Cavenham Heath #NNR Secret Fen today, 1st time have seen - presumably - galls of Thistle Gall Fly (Urophora cardui)?
Young Oak leaves unfurling.
Clump of Bluebells (perhaps planted?) past prime.

Took our 1st @NatureMetrics eDNA sample in ditch at Secret Fen #CavenhamHeath for @TheBrecksLP @PondRiverStream #TestingTheWater project. Good that N & P both <0.2 ppm. Observed by Red Deer. Sand & House Martins overhead. (Missed White Stork, Hobby & Swift!)

Happy Easter!

Paschal Full Moon (& Arcturus above it to left), 1st full moon after spring equinox (21 March), after which
Easter Sunday occurs. Also reflected in River Lark. Owl.

On walk home from Guinness Arms, Icklingham, across Cavenham Heath.

Love sharing #CavenhamHeath with friends, esp. on a beautiful winter's afternoon, Woodlarks yodelling.
Plenty puffballs, incl. Grassland Puffball (Lycoperdon lividum).
But what's the toadstool - not Yellow Fieldcap (except on Emmi's head!)?

Delighted to find Winter Polypore (Polyporus brumalis) on Cavenham Heath today, along with old friends - always a treat to see on the Breckland heaths - Earthtongue (Geoglossum sp.) & Meadow Coral (Clavulinopsis corniculata).

The winter spates seem to have washed away several of the obstructions in the River Lark upstream of #CavenhamHeath. One fallen willow I went over, and another under. Generally there is a path through the willow carr, reed beds & watercress beds in the path of the Mute Swans. 7/8

Minnows the dominant fish in River Lark, #CavenhamHeath to Icklingham Lock. Lots Chub (some quite large) especially at this outflow, presumably from gravel pits? Also plenty Gudgeon. But visibility poor & saw no definite trout.

At Tuddenham Heath - Turkeytail?
Cladonia coniocraea lichen?
Some fine Ganodermas (maybe Southern Bracket) on a birch.
One of the magnificent oaks along the woodbank, basking in the evening sun.

On #CavenhamHeath flood, 3 Eurasian Curlews, Lapwings, Redshank, Oystercatcher, Cattle & Little Egret (Great White gone) & a busily hunting stoat who swam the inflow channel. On adjacent arable, exposed Breckland soils were being stripped off by high winds.

A rainbow over #CavenhamHeath, a benediction for the hard work of @NENorfolkSufflk providing a fox proof fence & rotavated strips for nesting Stone Curlews. Of course, the newly arrived pair were dozing among the heather at opposite end of reserve! New for #BirdSeenIn2021

#CavenhamHeath bathed in spring sun this last day of open access (end not day too soon as Stone Curlews already here a day or 2) except where Woodlark pair (new for #BirdsSeenIn2021) insisted on skulking. Cattle Egret on the flood. Corvids flew to roost across the sunset. #MyWalk

Mild evening along the River Lark at Heath, still very wet underfoot but a Cetti's Warbler loud in the reeds and a glorious sunset.

Lots of fungi on the trees in the willow carr...
