Text: About the Organization The National Sanitarium Association (NSA) was founded in 1896 to combat tuberculosis—then one of the world’s deadliest diseases. The organization played a key role in establishing Canada’s first sanitarium in Muskoka and the Toronto Free Hospital for the Consumptive Poor, helping advance care, research, and public understanding of tuberculosis at a time of widespread stigma and misinformation. Today, the NSA continues this legacy by funding leading-edge research in respirology, including areas such as drug-resistant TB, lung cell biology, lung transplantation, sleep apnea, asthma, and environmental health. In the mid-2010s, the association also launched a grant program to support emerging researchers as they begin their research careers. Tuberculosis is like when you buy a new car, and all of a sudden you notice how many other people have that same car.
Had no idea this organization existed!
