The #CrossbarryAmbush, occurring #ThisDayInHistory in 1921, was one of the bigger battles of the #IrishWarOfIndependence. ~1200 British troops tried to surround 100 #IrishRepublicanArmy (#IRA) volunteers in #CountyCork but failed — 10 soldiers and three IRA fighters were killed.

Dunlough Castle is a series of three fortified towers, or keeps, which stand almost invisibly upon the isthmus connecting “Three Castles Head” with the mainland. Dunlough is one of the oldest castles in southern Ireland and an example of Norman architecture and dry stone masonry.

Six of the stones of Ardgroom stone circle. They are tall and roughly triangular is shape, apart from the second from the right which is a bit stumpier. There's gorse and rough grass and reeds in the centre of the circle. It's a greyish day with low cloud, but you can see the sea in the distance. (I think it's the Kenmare estuary.)

In 1920, 65 men were held without trial in #CountyCork gaol by the UK and in August began a #HungerStrike. All but 11 were freed or moved. #MichaelFitzgerald died after 68 days, #JoeMurphy after 79. The rest held out for 94 days, ending the #CorkHungerStrike on #ThisDayInHistory.
