It’s that time of year again. The #Tipulidae ( #craneflies ) are out in large numbers and those big Araneus diadematus orb weaver #spiders are setting webs to catch them.
It’s a battlefield out in the garden!

Large cranefly on a green bamboo leaf - its narrow, greyish, muscular-looking body with a small head, long narrow wings and long, slender legs - giving it its common name of 'daddy long-legs'. (It's not the spider or a harvestman...)
Slender fly on a reddening autumn leaf in the sun - thorax an iridescent, metallic green, folded wings many-faceted and glittering.
Near-hemispherical ladybird - glossy red wing cases with black spots - on a dried, dying autumn leaf.
It seemed end-of-season for many bugs - then yesterday was warm and sunny. Cue ... bugs!

Surprise find of the morning: the cranefly, Tipula scurra, on my kitchen windowsill. A species associated with sandy soils & heathland, so probably from Sutton Park where there is a record from last year. #diptera #craneflies
