New #craneflies are recorded from #Mongolia, as a result of our entomological expeditions. Five (5) of those are first records from Mongolia.
Combining adventure and science leads to valuable additions to the known entomofauna of Mongolia.

A female Tipula pagana (distinguished by her vestigial wings & accompanied by several males) was attracted to the wall near the moth trap last night. #diptera #craneflies
A large spider in the process of wrapping a crane fly in silk for eating later in the day.
It’s that time of year again. The #Tipulidae ( #craneflies ) are out in large numbers and those big Araneus diadematus orb weaver #spiders are setting webs to catch them.
It’s a battlefield out in the garden!

Close-up view of a dragonfly, from above and off to one side. The four, many-faceted transparent wings glitter in the early autumn sunshine - and are attached via knobbly structures to the thorax - which, like the long abdomen, is covered in yellow, blue and black patterns. The bulbous eyes reveal complex shapes from various optical effects from the multitude of closely-packed lenses.
Large cranefly on a green bamboo leaf - its narrow, greyish, muscular-looking body with a small head, long narrow wings and long, slender legs - giving it its common name of 'daddy long-legs'. (It's not the spider or a harvestman...)
Slender fly on a reddening autumn leaf in the sun - thorax an iridescent, metallic green, folded wings many-faceted and glittering.
Near-hemispherical ladybird - glossy red wing cases with black spots - on a dried, dying autumn leaf.
It seemed end-of-season for many bugs - then yesterday was warm and sunny. Cue ... bugs!
Dragonfly: Aeshna cyanea?
Cranefly: Tipula sp.?
Fly: Sargus bipunctatus?

A Crane Fly with long brown legs and body. Wings outstretched. It’s on the outside of my window so you are seeing it from underneath the body. Reflection of my phone in the glass. Green hedge behind is blurred.
Crane Fly or Tipula seen from another angle. Slightly sideways on . There’s a red brick wall to its right and green hedge behind. Both blurred.
Tipula or Crane Fly.
On the outside of my window so it let me get very close with my phone camera.
Beautiful long body and legs. Zoom in for the emerald eyes!
Don’t know if they are really that colour or if it’s a reflection from the hedge.

Favourite bycatch from last night: the extremely large cranefly Tipula maxima. #diptera #craneflies
A cranefly with black markings against a yellow background. This individual has unfortunately managed to lose two of his legs, but was otherwise in good health and flew off into the ivy when released.
Surprise find of the morning: the cranefly, Tipula scurra, on my kitchen windowsill. A species associated with sandy soils & heathland, so probably from Sutton Park where there is a record from last year. #diptera #craneflies

Dark blue, iridescent and metallic beetle - on a craggy cliff of an old stone wall - gingerly poking at a ragged cord of spider silk.
Fly with bulbous, pale green compound eyes, a translucent, pale yellow and black abdomen and folded, transparent wings on an old meadow flower.
Cranefly - all long, skinny limbs, body and wings - sprawled between some bright green leaves of spring grass.
Small, slender beetle - dark, long wing cases with a fine fuzz of hairs - perched on a green grass leaf.
Bugs? Bugs, from yesterday.
Metallic blue beetle: Agelastica alni?
Fly on old flower: Rhagio tringarius?
Cranefly: Tipula sp.?
Beetle on grass: Cantharis sp.?

Two Crane flies displaying excellent mating form. The underside of a large green leaf is backdrop for two spindly, dark grey Crane flies as they copulate back ent to back end.
Photo of a bright green leaf with a Crane fly in black relief. It looks just like a huge mosquito, but does not bite.
Close up of a bright green leak surface with a black Crane fly, post copulation. Un peu déranger depuis ‘la petite mort’.

Subgenus Chionea (any experts know genus?)
Very unusual limoniid crane fly! Wingless, very active below freezing, “drinks” snow! Also called snow flies. Lives in forested areas. This one under cordwood log, 52*F NE USA. Immobile, perhaps too warm?

Though they look similar to #Mosquitoes, they do not bite nor carry the dangerous diseases like the #Mosquito does.
