Several light tan mushrooms with white speckles grow in a lawn. They are in various stages of growth, from darker button to flattening caps. They were too close to the ground for a stem shot. I could have pulled one out, but hesitate to do that in people's yards.

Amanita pantherinoides, the western panther amanita, is very toxic. Apparently it usually grows under firs in the forest, but here it is under a fir in the city.

Witches butter (probably Dacrymyces chrysospermus) grows in several small, orange, jelly-like, ridged blobs on dark brown, leathery looking, decaying leaves. A bit of bright green moss is also in the frame, growing amid the leaves, wjich were in a huge pikevunder a tree, as if they had all fallen at once.

Moss pixie caps (Galerina hypnorum?) growing in very green moss in a rock wall crevice. The small mushrooms are orange-yellow with bell shaped caps. The caps show striations radiating from the center to the scalloped edges. There is an photo insert on the right hand side showing the flat gills and stem attachment of a couple of the mushrooms. The stem and gills are almost the same color as the cap. The stem is thin, long and lightly speckled.

There is a tipped cap next to it showing a dark stem attachment point and creamy brown gills radiating to the edge. A small cluster of Mycena spp mushrooms hug a very dark brown decomposing stump, surrounded by wet green moss and miscellaneous leafy debris. You can't see the stalks because they're very short at this point. The caps are oyster colored, with darker striations and gently rippled edges. The lighting is very dark, thanks to cloudy, rainy, overcast skies

A cluster of overlapping orange-brown flat capped mushrooms is growing under a tree in the grass and dead leaves . The caps are darkened by all the rain in the last few days. There are a couple of mushrooms turned over, showing orange gills radiating from orange-brown stems. There is one small, conical young mushroom growing alongside the cluster. The caps all look very moist, shining in the sunlight. If you look closely there are raindrops on the grass blades

A turkey tail fungus growing on the end of a pruned chestnut branch looks like a velvety spread out fan. Looking down, one can see three or four layers of caps growing in a spiral. The caps are edged with a cream colored strioe, then a tan band, a darker brown band, an almost black band, then a rust colored band surrounding a dark center.

A fallen branch covered with gray bark has a small colony of tan split gills (Schizophyllum commune) growing in a patch of green spiky moss. The fungus caps are mostly fan shaped and covered with fine hairs. One has been broken off to show the gill structure underneath the cap, radiating from the center.

False turkey tails grow on a branch. The branch is partially debarked, showing a gray rough bark and a smooth brown cambium. The mushroom bodies grow upwards in a fan shape, with concentric lines of colors: orange and cream on the outer edges, and gray green in a semicircle inside the other bands. The green color comes from algae that grow on the fungal surface in a commensalist relationship. These particular ones are quite small, about one inch across.

A cluster of bonnet (Mycena galericulata? M. inclinata? ) mushrooms grows on an old log among fallen leaves. The mushrooms are small, with convex grayish-tan caps and slender feet. You can see the striation of the gills through the thin caps. The leaves surrounding the cluster are in shades of yellow, and also spotted with autumnal rot. There is some moss on the log, and a few brown pine needles.

These grow everywhere, and are the prototypical LBM.

This photo shows a very unusual and striking type of wild mushroom growing on the forest floor.

Visual Description:
In the center of the image, there is a bright orange-red mushroom with a hollow, cage-like structure. It looks almost like a delicate, three-dimensional net or lattice ball that has grown from the ground. Its surface is porous, with large oval and circular openings, giving it the appearance of a strange coral or a sculpted lantern. The mushroom is surrounded by dry pine needles, small pieces of forest debris, and a soft, blurred green background of trees and leaves. The photo has a sharp focus on the mushroom itself, while the background is artistically blurred, making the mushroom stand out dramatically. At the bottom right corner, there is a faint watermark reading © ahaktekin.

Scientific Explanation:
This mushroom is known as the Red Cage fungus (Clathrus ruber), a member of the stinkhorn family (Phallaceae). It is recognizable for its hollow, lattice-like fruiting body. The bright orange or red color is one of its defining features. Scientifically, this fungus has an unusual way of spreading its spores: the inner surfaces of the cage become coated with a dark, sticky, foul-smelling substance called gleba. The unpleasant odor attracts flies and other insects, which land on the fungus, pick up spores on their bodies, and then carry them to new locations, helping the fungus reproduce. While visually fascinating and unique, this mushroom is generally not edible due to its smell and texture.
