A photo of a black moth with white spots on its wings resting on a light blue wood surface. The moth has a black head and long slender antennae held backwards along its wings. It's legs are banded white with black and it has fuzzy thighs. Its wings are black with a silvery sheen, and have three large white spots. There is a delicate fringe on the trailing edge of the wings which alternates whjite and black.

Have some m#oth sheen for this #MothMonday. This moth is in genus Desmia, there are two very similar looking species and you have to look at their bellies to differentiate them to species level, but this one was having none of that πŸ˜‚

The Orange Underwing (Archiearis parthenias) flies around the leafless canopy of mature birch trees on sunny, still days in early spring 🌳

They rarely descend low enough for close inspection, so binoculars are a must!

A photo of a gray, black, and tan Carpenterworm Moth resting on the side of some weather worn wood. The moth has black eyes and antennae. It's legs are gray with black bands. Its forebody is gray and speckled tan. The wings, seen edge-on, are grayish tan with black net-like reticulation. The very plump abdomen, grayish tan, can just be seen under the wings.

A photo of a narrow bodied moth from above. The moth has black head, antennae, wings, and legs which shimmer with a blue iridescence. The wings are the iridescent black along the edges, but clear in the middle. The abdomen of the moth is bright orange red with some iridescence. The end of the moth's tail has a fan-like spray of iridescent black scales whch looks something like a shrimp's tail.

After leaving a light on in my greenhouse all night, I found a Grey Shoulder-knot NFG on the wall this morning. Since there isn't any woodland close to where I live, I assumed that I wouldn't get this moth. It's always nice to get a new tick.
