My winter bird bath looks a little weird but is actually quite efficient. The 5-gallon reservoir keeps the water warm and is so large that I rarely have to refill. The heater and pump keep the water above freezing and moving, so animals can hear the water and know where to find it. The only exposed water is in the little shallow cup on top. That’s where the water is pumped from the reservoir. Since so little water is exposed to the air, it evaporates surprisingly slowly! The tall branches allow the birds safe spaces to perch while checking out the fountain. More pictures to follow.
The easiest way to help wildlife: providing water, esp in winter.
This is just a 5-gallon bucket wrapped in bubble wrap with an outer layer of bark to make it look more natural and hopefully less scary. Inside is a cheap water heater and even cheaper pump. That’s it!
