Meat Consumption and Cognitive Health by APOE Genotype This cohort study investigates the association of meat consumption with risk of cognitive decline and dementia among older adults with APOE genotypes ε3/ε4 and ε4/ε4.

Are you thinking about becoming a #vegetarian or #vegan? Then start by checking your genetic profile for the #APOE genotypes ε3/ε4 and ε4/ε4.

People with these genotypes benefit from eating meat, as it’s associated with slower cognitive decline and a reduced risk of #dementia.

Research Discovery: Two variants of the genotype apolipoprotein E (or APOE) may help “super agers” resist Alzheimer’s disease.

Research Discovery: Two variants of the genotype apolipoprotein E (or APOE) may help “super agers” resist Alzheimer’s disease.

Diseases Affected: Alzheimer’s disease

Diseases Affected: Alzheimer’s disease

Key Findings: Adults who qualified as “super agers” (people aged 80 or older whose memory and cognitive skills have not declined in 20 or 30 years) tend to have a higher frequency of APOE2 and APOE3 alleles, and a lower frequency of APOE4 alleles. APOE4 appears to be a genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s.

What's next? While further research on super agers is needed, it’s currently possible to check for APOE variants in a genetic test. A higher APOE4 frequency suggests a higher Alzheimer’s risk, but health care providers can help patients identify and minimize other potential risk factors.

Keypoints:
Muscularis macrophages express high levels of ApoE after intestinal manipulation, but macrophage-specific deletion of ApoE does not impair gut motility or tissue morphology.
While global ApoE deficiency mildly affects intestinal transit and promotes inflammation, macrophage-derived ApoE is dispensable for maintaining normal and postoperative gut motility.

Biomarkers - PubMed The evaluated plasma apoE4 phenotyping assay demonstrated perfect accuracy in detecting the presence or absence of an E4 allele. However, it did not reliably distinguish E4 heterozygotes from…

4/4
While the assay is effective for ruling out E4 alleles, confirmation via genotyping is still recommended for the most accurate results in the case of E4/E4, especially in individualized interventions contexts. 🧠

The risk effect of #APOE is ancestry dependent, and the diverse set of donors in our study allowed us to assess this in our data. Oligo.3 was the major source of DEGs in both African and European ancestry, but DEGs were quite different between the two ancestries

Proposed model for oligodendrocyte subcluster classification and maturation trajectory in APOE E2+ and E4+ carriers

This pattern of downregulation of #oligodendrocyte maturation genes in pre-mylenating Oligo.3’s led us to hypothesize that the maturation of oligos is reduced in the #APOE E4+ ERC, which could lead to reduced myelination, rendering neurons more vulnerable to degradation in #Alzheimers disease
