A very young and exceedingly chubby rambling man sits cross-legged on a patchy lawn between his two older sisters. Pamela, on the left cradles a cat while Barbara, aka Bobby, sits shyly with her pigtails to the right. Beyond our group the garden consists of a rose border, paths and a wooden fence separating our garden from school playing fields. Bobby is no longer with us but Pam and I now live not far from each other in the South.
Time shifts forwards and the rambling man is in school uniform, blazer and cap, shorts, knobbly knees and. Flanked by the same much taller sisters who seem to be laughing at some joke or maybe at my “first day at school” look. A football stands in the border to the right and behind us the house we grew up in after the Second World War.
… and we are back in time again. A sunny day and we have just been to the ice cream van. A small black dog looks interested in our ices but Dad, still in work shirt and tie, looks discouraging. I am concentrating hard on eating my ice cream before it melts. Bobby looks uncomfortable in the heat while sophisticated elder sister Pam has an ice lolly. I wonder if it was a Pendleton’s Twicer? Probably just plain back then - around 1949 or ‘50.
I see that this Friday has been designated #SiblingsDay 🧑🧑🧒🧒, so I’m going to use that as an excuse to post pictures of myself and my two big sisters back in our Liverpool childhood garden. Plus one rare shot including our Dad.
