Photograph taken of a white marble sculpture of a naked lady sitting on top of her towel looking down at her bath and wishing she hadn't added so much hot water. She has thirty minutes before the twins' bedtime routine in which to have some 'me time'. Sadly the bath water could boil a crab and the clock is ticking. In the meantime, she's trying to keep warm by huddling over. She knows this won't work however, in her haste she grabbed a towel the size of a pillow case, which is only fit to prevent her buttocks from getting frostbite from the side of the bath. She doesn't have the capacity to think about the post-bath towel dilemma just yet. The C19th sculpture is called 'Solitude' by John Lawlor, and is on display at Osborne House, Queen Victoria's summer palace on the Isle of Wight.

Two photographs collaged vertically giving glimpses of each in tall portrait format. Like the previous post, I wanted to capture the contrast between flawless opulence vs the hours of hard work to produce it. On the left is a view of the huge dining table in the ornate Durbar Room at Osborne House, ready for a fancy banquet. Several place settings are laid and dramatic, tropical plant displays create a centrepiece. Osborne House on the Isle of Wight was the summer palace of Queen Victoria. On the right is a scullery with a white Belfast sink below a leaded-glass window too high up to see out of. The sink has simple brass taps and various bowls next to it. This was taken at Speke Hall in Liverpool. Imagine the volume of washing up a banquet (and the preparation for it) would create for the servants!

Collage of two photographs placed side by side to show the differing lives of the uber-wealthy and domestic servants. On the left is a view of the landing to Queen Victoria's private apartments at her summer residence, Osborne House. There are two beautifully decorated arches in creams, blues and golds, with layers of ornate coving above. A long red carpet lines the floor with a dark balustrade to the right protecting from any falls. Marble busts on tall plinths line the left wall. The image on the right is so simple in comparison. Taken at the stunning, Elizabethan marvel of Gawthorpe Hall in the depths of Lancashire, it shows the worn stone, spiral steps leading down to the servants kitchens. Took this photograph leaning over from the top so it's a view from overhead. The light is minimal, from a window out of view.

Photograph taken in the Drawing Room at Osborne House, looking up at a huge chandelier which is reflected in an enormous wall mirror. This chandelier is one of a pair in this room and were a birthday present! Osborne House was the summer palace of Queen Victoria on the Isle of Wight. Grisly fact - in 1901, the former queen lay in state in this room after her death before her funeral at Windsor Castle. For more info please visit: www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/osborne Photograph shows a huge chandelier which is illuminated by tall candle-shaped lights on its perimeter. Ornate coving above and dramatic yellow satin curtains with a fancy pelmet to one side of a full length massive mirror. In the mirror the chandelier is reflected, as is a doorway and grand painting. Tricky to work out if the reflection is the second chandelier or not. However, I recall they weren't so close together and there were enormous mirrors used cleverly so bounce light around the room. Think I'm right it's a reflection. The palace is run very well by English Heritage. Gardens and grounds are extensive too. Well worth a visit and easy to spend a day here. Did I find a couple of rooms creepy and need to leave those quickly...yes.

Struggling a bit with this fantastic theme so hefty dose of artistic licence used! Photograph taken looking up at the Minstrels Gallery in the Durbar Room at Osborne House. This was Queen Victoria's summer palace on the Isle of Wight. Looking up at the ornate white plasterwok by Bhai Ram Singh, there are three Indian-style arches over the minstrels gallery at one end of this enormous and fancy banqueting room. The gallery has an elaborate dark wood balustrade which contrasts with the plasterwork. The gallery is backlit with a warm terracotta light which risers to an amber colour, reminiscent of a sunset. This room was dramatically beautiful, though I was most drawn to the huge collection of paintings at Osborne House and could have spent a happy week just looking at those. Easy to spend a full day here - so much to see and do.

Section of a rich wood door inlaid with intricately patterned plaster and finished with a very fancy gilded bird of paradise. Absolutely beautiful but bet it's a right dust collector!

Royal Collection records identify Munni as a 16-year-old sweeper, or mehtrani, from Lahore in the Punjab region of British India (today in Pakistan), a worker from one of the lowest-ranked caste communities whose essential cleaning labor was often treated as socially “unclean” and disregarded. In 1886, Queen Victoria commissioned Austrian painter Rudolf Swoboda, born in Vienna in 1859, to travel through India and paint the peoples of her empire; over forty of these portraits, including Munni’s, were later hung together in the Durbar Corridor at Osborne House. The vertical panel shows a young South Asian girl in quiet profile, her body turned to the left (our right). A warm red tunic, edged with a narrow band of gold, wraps her torso and rises toward her neck, its rich color glowing against a plain, softly textured background. Large hoop earrings threaded with tiny glass beads catch the light, while her dark hair, partly covered, falls back in loose strands under a thin beige covering that extends across her body. Swoboda models her medium-brown skin with careful, naturalistic highlights along cheek, nose and lips, so that her features feel observed rather than idealized. The panel pulls us into an intimate distance, as if we’ve paused beside her in a brief, thoughtful stillness during her day. Swoboda had impressed the Queen with his portraits of “live” Indian artisans at the Colonial and Indian Exhibition in London and painted "Munni" on site from close observation, using oil on a small wooden panel to preserve fine details of clothing, jewelery and expression. Seen today, the work sits uneasily between imperial cataloguing and individual presence: commissioned to exemplify a “type,” Munni nevertheless appears as a specific teenager with a name, history and life. Her steady, gaze to the side invites us to recognize both the power inequalities that shaped her portrayal and the quiet dignity she maintains within them.

Photograph taken in the Durbar Room at Osborne House, Isle of Wight. The room was designed as a collaboration by John Lockwood Kipling and architect Bhai Ram Singh and is an ornate, breathtaking, meringue of interior decoration. Not even got to the table decoration yet! Image shows part of a huge room with tall ceilings, covered in intricate white plaster patterns in an Indian style. Down the centre of the room is a large dining table with numerous place settings. Up the middle of the table is what can only be described as a tropical paradise - small palm trees, ferns, bouquets of flowers - lots of lush greenery (all artificial obvs). In the background is a tourist engrossed in the artefacts in a display case against the wall. Osborne House was the summer residence of Queen Victoria and is run by English Heritage today.

Photograph of the front of Osborne House, Queen Victoria's beloved holiday home and place of death on the Isle of Wight. Built in an Italianate style. Cream-coloured, fancy building, in essentially two cubes of different sizes and a tall rectangular tower with fancy windows and balustrading. Another wing is out of shot on the right but it casts shadows across the scene. Flag flying atop the tower amd blue sky overhead. It looks like summer but it was actually a beautiful autumn day! Osborne House is run by English Heritage and is a wonderful place to visit. Not a royalist but a fan of beautiful architecture, gardens and the coastline. Could spend a week looking at the incredible paintings, sculptures and interior features!

View down from the terrace to the ornamental fountain at Osborne House, Isle of Wight. Queen Victoria's holiday palace. Well worth a visit. Couple of rooms to move quickly through if you're sensitive to spirits. Circular stone pond with a tall central creation spouting water. Stone steps down to the pond at the four main compass points each with a sculpture on either side. Beautifully tended lawns, trees and a foliage entwined pergola-walkway surround the scene. Blue sky and clouds overhead.

Photograph of the back of Osborne House on the Isle of Wight which was Queen Victoria's holiday palace designed in the style of a Renaissance Italian palazzo. Taken from underneath an unruly trailing plant covered colonnade in the formal gardens. The building has two flights of symmetrical steps down to the gardens from the terraces. Building is faced in cement and stone, and glows a buttery cream in the sunlight. First offering for this brilliant new theme. Managed to squeeze in both house and garden, but I wish I'd somehow managed to swerve the plant frond that intersects the image!
