The Inaugural Hester Creek UNDICI 2022 Super Tuscan 2022 was a super vintage for the Okanagan wineries.  Hester Creek Estate Winery, as part of this epic vintage, vinified their first Super Tuscan wine, named UNDICI.  To taste UNDICI is to taste a little bit of Italy.  UNDICI joins The Judge and Garland as part of their Origin Series wines. Together these three wines reflect the beautiful terroir and diversity of the Okanagan Valley.

Petrolo Galatrona Val d'Arno di Sopra 2015, Tuscany, Italy It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Dark ruby in color with a short reddish/brick rim. Beautiful nose of black currants, cooked plums, light cedar, black tea, Mediterranean spices, dark chocolates, tobacco leaf, herbs, light earth, cola and black pepper. Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Dry on the palate with black currants, plums, cherries, oak, spices, chocolates, coffee, black pepper and black tea. Medium minus on the finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries. This is a very tasty Merlot from Tuscany. Rich, extracted and still showing lots of fruit notes. This 10 year old Merlot needs a few years in the bottle to mature properly, but drinking nicely now. Complex and nicely balanced. The nose is just gorgeous, but the palate doesn’t quite match its complexity. Needed 2 hours in the decanter to open up and show the beautiful nose. Robert Parker 96 points. Wine Spectator 95 points. This Super Tuscan is a little disappointing, as it received great reviews, but I had it blind, so it is what it is. Good as a sipping wine and better with food. 100% Merlot grapes were aged in (33% new) French Oak barrels for 18 months. 13.5% alcohol by volume. 91 points. $120.

Cantine Dei Sancta Catharina 2018, Tuscany, Italy Dark ruby in color with a short reddish rim. Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Dry on the palate with nice complexity and mouthfeel. Showing blackberries, plums, cooked cherries, oak, vanilla, licorice, spices, chocolates, tobacco, herbs, light earth, espresso and light cola. Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries. This is a delicious Bordeaux blend from Tuscany. Fruit forward and well balanced. Alcohol is nicely integrated. Needs time to open up properly, but delicious right out of the bottle. A delicious wine with so much potential. Will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years. Easy drinking and good by itself or with food. A blend of 30% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Sangiovese and 10% Petit Verdot. Aged for 24 months in French oak barrels. A small production of only 3,800 bottles made, this is bottle # 2,096. 14.5% alcohol by volume. 92 points. $70.
