These words "The people of #MN will soon recognize the importance of agencies like the #USDA that serve behind the scenes roles benefiting all of us" will prove prophetic not just to MN but to all of the United States.

Three treehopper bumps on a twig. One is smaller than the other two. One big one is facing right, stepping over the smaller one. The other big one is also facing right but on the side of the twig facing us so all that’s visible is its back. The nymphs are mostly black with 5 spikes on its pronotum, tinted red. The edges of the pronotum are also red. The abdomen has yellow spots.
It’s #treehopperTuesday. Take a look at these punk nymphs in my hedge 🌿🌱

Side view of the beetle, likely Calligrapha bidenticola, displaying its domed elytra with a distinct cream-colored band curving across dark brown wing covers. Fine hairs and dust particles cling to its body, all rendered in high detail. The legs and underside are reddish-brown and slightly fuzzy.
Extreme close-up of the head of a calligrapher beetle, likely Calligrapha bidenticola. The image shows fine surface textures, compound eyes, and segmented antennae. The beetle’s reddish-brown exoskeleton is glossy, with detailed ridges and short bristles visible across the face
Probably Calligrapha bidenticola: this calligrapher beetle #Chrysomelidae from my collection offers a close look at the face, just as a student of entomology might see through a scope. For now, here’s a glimpse into our world.

Been a while since I did a moth portrait. I think this little one is a Setaceous Hebrew character (Xestia c-nigrum) found resting in my parents' garden last week.

Extreme macro of a rove beetle’s head from the genus Ontholestes. The surface is densely covered in golden and silvery hairs. Prominent, oval-shaped compound eyes sit on either side of the head. Fine antennae and bristly mouthparts extend downward.
Close-up side view of the rove beetle’s head and thorax. The dense, golden-bronze setae (hairs) create a metallic sheen across its surface. The eye is large and well-rounded. Jointed legs, mouthparts, and part of the wing casing are in sharp detail.
Full-body lateral view of a pinned Ontholestes sp. rove beetle, approximately 15mm long. The beetle has a slender, segmented abdomen with alternating light and dark bands. Legs and antennae are spiny and reddish. The background is black.
This Ontholestes sp. rove beetle is relatively large, ~15mm and often found near dung or carrion. Like predators at a watering hole, it uses prowls the swamp of poo, preying on insects drawn to the decay.

A brown lacewing resting on a light-colored, textured surface. The insect has long antennae, reddish brown eyes, and finely veined wings with a mottled pattern. The wings are held tent-like over its back, and the body shows golden brown tones with scattered darker markings.
Extreme close-up of the lacewing’s head and upper body. The image shows detailed green iridescent eyes, multi-segmented antennae with fine hairs, and the intricate texture of the wings and body. Legs and thorax are covered in small bristles and golden hues.
Brown lacewings. Neuroptera are wild. You get parasites, you get animals that just basically eat everything. This one, a Hemerobiidae, is a little rarer than the green lacewings you usually see at lights. They are solid predators and some are even raised for biocontrol. 🌿

Extreme close-up of a weevil’s head, focusing on its compound eye and surrounding exoskeleton. The surface is covered in tiny, shimmering scales that reflect bright green, turquoise, and blue hues. These colors shift with the light, a result of structural coloration rather than pigment. The scales are tightly packed and organized, producing a metallic, iridescent effect. The image reveals fine detail of the weevil’s texture, with contrasting areas of smooth black and glittering scale-covered regions.
This weevil’s colors aren’t from pigment: they’re structural. Microscopic scales manipulate light through interference, diffraction, and scattering, creating vivid iridescence. From my personal collection.

Beautiful shot!
The White-marked Tussock Moth (Orgyia leucostigma) caterpillar is hard to miss—those bright red glands and bushy tufts are a warning. This species uses urticating hairs for defense, which can irritate human skin. A striking example of Lepidoptera strategy.
One of those moths that screams don’t touch me absolutely stunning in an alien critter kind of way. The caterpillar of Orgyia leucostigma flaunts bold colors and urticating hairs as a warning. Nature’s way of saying “look, but no touch”
