🤯 One of its most fascinating behaviors:
Adult males carry female nymphs with their hind legs and mate with them immediately after they emerge as adults.
Tiny mite, remarkable strategy.

Looking down on an orange-brown oval creature. It has a translucent shell through which are visible some paler orange-brown pits.
Looking on the underside of the same orange-brown creature. There are four pairs of legs arranged such that the head end of the creature is to the lower right of picture.
Found this morning in Brede High Woods (in horrible weather). Some kind of Mite. Am thinking it is probably one of the Uropodidae, a mesostigmatic mite.
Can anyone help with id?

Friday I gave a 25 minute intro-to-mites guest lecture to the bachelor students. A miracle happened where I actually ended a couple minutes ahead of schedule! Anyway, it was very well received, and Mr. Oedipus Tex the lone star tick was particularly popular.

Macro photograph of a tiny wasp with an even tinier parasitic mite on it.
Nice and damp in the garden this morning so thought I'd do a little springtail hunting. Didn't find many, but DID find this tiny (~2mm) wasp with a minuscule parasitic mite on it! #wasplove #acari #Staffs #parasitism #macro #photography

A highly detailed close-up macro photograph of a dark brown oribatid mite, viewed head-on. The mite has a compact body covered in fine setae, giving it a slightly fuzzy appearance. Its large front legs are lifted forward in a grasping motion. Fine, bristle-like antennae or sensory setae extend from the head. The background is a smooth, warm gradient of brown, creating strong contrast that emphasizes the fine detail and texture of the mite’s exoskeleton.
Side view macro photograph of the same oribatid mite. The body appears squat and heavily armored with a textured, glossy cuticle. The legs are robust and covered in short bristles, lifting it slightly off the surface. There are subtle specks of debris or substrate on the mite’s back. The background is softly blurred in golden and amber tones, highlighting the tactile details of the mite's surface.
A scale reference photo showing the tiny oribatid mite positioned on the edge of a British £1 coin. The mite is barely a speck next to the engraved portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, dramatically illustrating its minuscule size. The metal surface of the coin is worn and textured, providing an effective comparison to convey how small and detailed the mite is in real life.
This was my first exercise in oribatid diversity. This individual, likely from the Crotonioidea superfamily, moved slowly and looked like a tiny armored beast. I placed it on a £1 coin for scale.

A macro photo of a reddish-brown oribatid mite on a pale, fibrous surface, likely a leaf. The mite has a rounded, shiny body and visible legs, appearing mid-movement. In the background, a single translucent yellow orb floats slightly above the surface, this is a Tetranychidae egg, possibly from a spider mite. The fine leaf textures and the suspended egg add depth and ecological context to the image.
A sharply focused macro image of a tiny reddish-brown oribatid mite walking across a pale green, fibrous surface that resembles a leaf. The mite has a glossy, dome-shaped body and long, fine legs splayed outward. In the reflection on its smooth exoskeleton, the faint outline of the photographer’s face is visible, adding an unexpected sense of scale and presence to the shot. The surface details of the leaf emphasize the mite’s minuscule size.
A close-up macro photo showing a single grain of uncooked rice on a white background. Near the pointed end of the rice is a tiny reddish-brown mite, identified as an oribatid mite, likely from the family Liacaridae. The mite is just a fraction of the rice grain's length, emphasizing its extremely small size. Its oval body is glossy, and its minute legs are visible upon close inspection.
Trying to ID some Oribatids I found crawling out of mulch, I think these might be #Liacaridae. To give a sense of scale, I put one next to a grain of rice. These critters are as important as earthworms in soils and found across the globe.

High-resolution macrophotograph of a tiny white mite, likely from the family Eupodidae, walking across the surface of a shallow puddle nestled in a natural rock basin. The mite is the central focus, crisply defined with delicate, fine legs and a soft, translucent body that stands out against the richly textured rock. The stone surface is saturated with deep ochre, brown, olive green, and amber tones, resembling watercolor layers. Small organic debris and specks of sand dot the environment. Lighting enhances the contrast and depth of the scene, drawing attention to the mite's position while maintaining the visual complexity of the natural background. The image captures the scale, fragility, and beauty of this overlooked organism in its habitat.
The second image is an extreme close-up of the same mite, showing fine anatomical detail. Its translucent body is pale cream, with eight slender legs extending outward in motion. Delicate setae are visible on its legs and body, and its tiny chelicerae and pedipalps are poised forward. The mite is sharply in focus while the background fades into a granular, earthy blur. The image reveals not just the mite’s morphology, but also its interaction with the microscopic terrain, tiny grains of sediment and mineral flecks make up the surrounding substrate.
Probably a Eupodidae mite walking on the water surface of a puddle near a waterfall. A beautiful way to close out the mite course in Arkansas. I’m so grateful to everyone I met from around the world during this incredible experience.
