If you go down to the woods today, you might just come across these bristly little flies called Tachina lurida. These ones were in Chicksands Wood in Bedfordshire earlier. #Tachinidae #Diptera

First round of malaise trap setups from this past weekend. The vastly under-collected Colorado Plateau (at least for ichneumonids) is one of my main focal areas this year. This first spot is near Kanab, Utah.

Close up pic of a male house fly with an orange abdomen, dark grey thorax and reddish eyes resting on the pink/black-coloured stone wall of my house that is also dusted with lots of little yellow spots of lichen
My first use of the fabulous new photographic guide to flies (Falk et al) suggests that the fly resting on the wall of my house this afternoon could be the Orange-bellied Bristleshin, Phaonia subventa… #Diptera
A close-up of a wing of Merodon equestris, the Narcissus bulb fly, a hover fly that resembles a bumble bee. One of the veins (or lines) in the wing has a squiggle or bend.
Seems to be present in every species of Eristalini and Merodontini I've personally observed. Not present in Milesiini or Syrphinae from what I've seen.
Haven't photographed a live hover fly recently, but here's a Merodon equestris specimen I worked with:

GBE | Tachinid Endoparasitoid Flies do not Rely on Domesticated Viruses, Unlike Multiple Hymenopteran Lineages
Oukkal et al. find that, unlike endoparasitoid hymenopterans, endoparasitoidism in tachinid flies is not associated with viral domestication, possibly due to differences in venom use and host immune system avoidance.
