Lots of Mire Mourner sawflies (Dolerus madidus) in a rushy meadow at Cali Heath @yorkswildlife.bsky.social reserve today. Males with abdomen orange-banded; females with orange more extensive, over the thorax as well. Things really starting to liven up now. 😃 @ynuorg.bsky.social #symphyta #sawflies

Unforgettable #Hymathon2025, a virtual symposium of International Society of Hymenopterists Hymathon is the society’s annual 24-hour-long marathon of Hymenoptera! Join online from anywhere in the world to listen to presentations from Hymenopterists, present your own research, participate in social events and make new connections. It is full of research talks, fun events, and more than a small amount of chaos as the 24 hours reaches the end! Hymathon 2025 occurred on 4–5 December 2025, with four sessions over the 24 hour period.
Unforgettable #Hymathon2025 ❤️
Looking forward to our new meetings with @hymenopterists.bsky.social

A green caterpillar with white longitudinal stripes and a yellowish head with dark markings. Amongst brown conifer needles on a piece of white fabric.
What very much appears to be European Spruce Sawfly Gilpinia hercyniae, tapped from a spruce at the weekend. Apparently the first Kent record. #KentNature #sawfly #sawflies #Symphyta
New sawfly larva for me the other day. Have a suspicion this might be a Wild Rose Fusehorn (Arge ochropus). Any ideas @andymus.bsky.social #sawflies #insects
Arge pagana. Rose sawfly larva.
Looking for moth #caterpillars in the garden one evening, I thought I'd found one, but it turned out to be the larva of a large rose sawfly.

Macro photograph of a sawfly, possibly the Turnip Sawfly - Athalia rosae.
Attractive little sawfly in the garden this morning. The black head, "shoulder pads" and wing margins, suggest it could be the Turnip Sawfly (Athalia rosae)? This individual was on a rhubarb leaf. #macro #photograph #Staffs #sawflies #Symphyta

…I am becoming Crazy Yard/Bug Lady, aren’t I? I have baggies and jars of specimens all over my kitchen, too, and a toolbelt I bought specifically for yardwork.
All of this to say: WHAT IS THIS THING?!

I was SO EXCITED to find my quarantined rose leaves with windowpane damage had a tiny worm on them last night. I thought, “Finally! I can confirm there are rose slugs/sawfly larvae!” and immediately set to work trying to get clear pictures of this teeny-tiny organism.

Very hungry Zig-zag Elm Sawfly larvae (Aproceros leucopoda) have stripped the leaves of elms on Waterworks Road, Norwich. There were several empty cocoons on the bare branches.

@andymus.bsky.social Have collected the first #sawflies from Orkney today in blistering heat (24°C) under blue skies and almost calm weather!
The remarkable and dry summer continues!
Cimbex luteus (Willow Clubhorn) on Salix in the Howardian Hills today...there can't be many better looking sawfly larvae in the UK! #yorkshiresawflies #sawflies #symphyta #ukwildlife

Iris Sawfly (Rhadinoceraea micans)
Every year I await the return at a local colony surrounding a pond. The iris leaves rising high amongst the horsetail, and each leaf with 3-5 larvae munching hungrily
Adult sawflies are black and commonly encountered flying around host plants

Spotted these this week, Hale, Liverpool. What I believe are all Sawflies. I wondered if it's possible to ID to species level? Larvae was on Hazel. Any help would be much appreciated. @andymus.bsky.social @suillia.bsky.social @naturespotter.bsky.social #entomology #insects #symphyta #sawflies

This years spring elderberry prunings, stuck in the soil in April and forgotten until now.
Unidentified white sawfly on an elderberry leaf
Every single elderberry cutting that I have taken and stuck in the soil, with no additional care, is now a new clone. This is wonderful to make a hedge! I'm hosting native #sawflies. But don't overdo it, or a single disease can devastate your habitat/food-forest.

Lots of tiny sawflies (~7mm; top) plus a larger one that only stayed for a single photo in @cubotanicgarden.bsky.social today . #Sawflies #Ento #Cambridge

Heterarthrus wuestneii larva mining the lobe tip of a Field Maple [Acer campestre] leaf. Whetstone, Leics. (UK) 01/06/2025.

Shiny, sleek black and apple-green sawfly with folded wings on a spiky-edged nettle leaf.
A rather round and fuzzy hoverfly, looking somewhere between a honey bee and a bumble bee, timidly sipping at the centre of a white-pink bramble flower.
Stripy black and yellow beetle intrepidly scaling a large pink petal of a rhododendron flower, ready to sample the nectar within.
Dainty little brown longhorn beetle on a pink-white bramble petal.
Some of today's bugs - a rather feisty sawfly (Tenthredo mesomela?) on nettles, a common drone fly (Eristalis tenax) on a bramble flower, another Rutpela maculata beetle, this time scaling the rhododendrons - and a tiny little longhorn beetle […]

A green leaf is against a black background. A light green with two yellow dorsal stripes sawfly larvae is perched on the leaf edge eating the leaf.
Todays find, several sawfly larvae, I think possibility of Ash Sawfly, Tomostethus nigritus, on Narrow Leaved Ash, Tomostethus nigritus, feeding merrily along despite the pouring rain. #Entomology #Hymenoptera #Sawflies
I’m pretty sure I saw the impressive Honeysuckle Sawfly (Abia lonicera) in the garden today: dark, moth-like antennae, partially clear wings, about the size of a Volucella hoverfly. Sadly when I fetched my phone it had flown… #sawflies
