A landscape oriented image of a greenfinch perched in a cherry tree in the garden. It’s bathed in beautiful spring sunlight. It sits to the right of the image, facing right bit its head turned to the left. The small branch it’s on has emerging leaves, the backdrop is a beech hedge still holding on to last year’s leaves.

A superb late afternoon & early evening at the superb Ouse Washes RSPB reserve. So many birds. One of the undoubtedly highlights was the pair of Garganey that Lynnette picked up as I was headlong in L3 heaven 🙂 Great find in the throng.

This image features a Common Wood Pigeon (Columba palumbus) perched prominently on a thick, horizontal tree branch. The bird is looking directly toward the camera, giving it a somewhat stout and curious appearance.
The Subject: Common Wood Pigeon
• Appearance: The pigeon has a plump, rounded body with soft grey plumage. You can see a hint of the characteristic white patch on its neck and a pinkish-grey wash on its breast.
• Details: Its small head features a bright yellow-tipped beak and pale eyes. Its pinkish-red feet are visible as it grips the textured bark of the branch.
• Posture: The bird is sitting in a relaxed, "fluffed up" position, which is common when they are resting or keeping warm.
Environment and Composition
• The Branch: The branch is light brown with rough, weathered bark, stretching across the lower half of the frame.
• Foliage: The bird is framed by different types of greenery. To the left, there are soft, budding catkins or new growth from a deciduous tree. To the right, there are dark green, needle-like branches of a coniferous tree, such as a cypress or cedar.
• Background: The background consists of a soft-focus, pale blue sky and blurred branches, which creates a shallow depth of field that makes the pigeon stand out sharply.
• Lighting: The lighting is bright and natural, suggesting an overcast day or filtered sunlight, which brings out the subtle transitions in the bird’s grey and mauve feathers.

Bonaparte's Gull hoodoo and bogey birds April 14th 2024 was a good day.  I saw my first Bonaparte's Gull at Frampton Marsh.  The bird went missing for hours during the day, but aft...

A blog about redemption, breaking the hoodoo of missing six Bonaparte's Gulls in a row! #ukbirding #birds #BirdsSeenIn2026

Exciting to see this young female Sparrowhawk trying to conceal itself behind a bush in the garden. It flew off chasing a blackbird, not sure if it caught it or not.

A picture of a male Mallard duck lying down on ghe bank of a lske made of bricks and covered in tufts of green and brown coloured weeds. The duck is facing away from the cameraand and its head with its iridescent green and blue head feathers is turned to the left. The ducks contoured grey, brown and blue coloured wing feathers are folded over its back and come to a point above its blackland white tail feathers that are open and fanned out below. The lake water infront of the duck is dead calm and mirror like and there is the reflection of cage wire and branches in it from the right side of the frame.

Best day for migration so far this spring by looks of things here. A quick look around this evening revealed our overdue first LRP of the year (Bridge Marsh), 100+ Sand Martins and a few Wheatear and Willow Warblers dotted around #ukbirding

Two Mediterranean Gulls standing on wood in shallow water. The gulls are mostly white with light grey wings, blood red bill and legs, with jet black hoods and a clear white eye ring marking.

Nice to see two Mediterranean Gulls on the Moss this early afternoon, along with my first five singing Willow Warblers of the year and a pair of Swallows freshly back in. #ukbirding #birds

Hello everyone. For today's #BirdoftheDay hosted by @robcrank68.bsky.social I thought I'd have a bit of fun with #Pigeons&Doves. It looks like the Pigeon on the right has the told the the one on the left to 'wind it's neck in.' 😆 #birds #nature #photography #ECK #ukbirding

Yet again West Ardnamurchan delivered on the raptor front. 3 White-tailed and 2 Golden Eagles, plus buzzard, kestrel and peregrine entertained us in Kilchoan this morning. The north coast added Hen Harrier to the day’s list after lunch.
