Some Cats have that Effect on You
The cat sat in the tree at the close of day.
She was a night-time tree cat
Dedicated to owl watching.
What a fat cat she was,
A capitalist cat,
Possessing her assets.
Round with fur floating,
All aerated.
Milky green eyes between the leaves,
Ovals of lime.
Blinking her thoughts into the spirals
Of her cute cat brain.
Her name is Enigma.
Come, Enigma, come down to earth!
Condescend.
Lap with your sly cat tongue
The pale milk waiting.
Due tribute to your beauty,
Your restrained, self-serving, independent, domineering
Affection.

A poem from the book.
Rendez-vous with a Beetle

Meet me in Usk And drone to me
Of what a beetle's
Eye can see
When lamps are lit
And the bats flit
In Usk
At dusk.
And tell me if
A beetle's nose
Detects the perfume
Of the rose
As gardens fade
And stars invade
The dusk
In Usk.

E.V. Rieu

For #WorldPoetryDay2024 a poem I originally wrote for the equinox, March 2020, when so many of us were shut up at home and feeling isolated. Hand/Over.

Playing with language is a lot of fun. Here’s my contribution to #WorldPoetryDay2024 in some poems I’ve written recently. (I don’t care if you think it’s nerdy).

Mostly they’re about loving and caring and what that means.

ON STARING AT A CELTIC ORNAMENT

There on the bronze, the line
Cut by the brain-held hand
Grips space in its design;
Seas shape, are shaped by, land.

So, too, when music falls
Then silence raises round
Its fragile, fretted edge
Shaped by, and shaping, sound.

Perhaps, embraced by time,
One life's elusive hour
May show some pleasing shape-
Bright track, or snowflake-flower?

Post image Magpies were originally called pies, the mag was added because of the sound they make. Some also thought they had fairies in their hearts and that witches sometimes rode them. Magpies have been seen gathering around a dead bird seemingly engaging in 'funeral' type behaviour though, of course, this is disputed as anthropomorphism by some, but l'd like to believe that they do, clever birds. Painting is by Tunnicliffe and is in the public domain:
