ON STARING AT A CELTIC ORNAMENT
There on the bronze, the line
Cut by the brain-held hand
Grips space in its design;
Seas shape, are shaped by, land.
So, too, when music falls
Then silence raises round
Its fragile, fretted edge
Shaped by, and shaping, sound.
Perhaps, embraced by time,
One life's elusive hour
May show some pleasing shape-
Bright track, or snowflake-flower?
Perfectly timed for #WorldPoetryDay2024, I was sent this yesterday. Beautiful! ❤️
Written by Jacquetta Hawkes, it was included in her only published collection, Symbols & Speculations, from 1948.
(Thanks to David Mullin for sending it to me & for the info about it)
