A close-up macro photograph of Synema parvulum, a crab spider from the Thomisidae family. The spider is tightly nestled between two green plant stems or leaves, with its body oriented vertically in the frame. The cephalothorax is reddish-brown with a shiny texture and visible eyes placed high on its head. Its abdomen is a bright, golden yellow with a metallic sheen. The spider's legs are a mix of greenish and dark brown, with the first and second pairs longer and more robust, typical of male crab spiders. The background is softly blurred, emphasizing the fine hairs on the legs and the vivid coloration of the spider.

A scanned excerpt from a scientific work titled "Thomisus parvulus" (now Synema parvulum), authored by Hentz in 1847. The text describes the spider as rufous in color, with a yellowish abdomen marked by a black band near the apex. It notes leg coloration and the relative size of leg pairs, highlighting sexual dimorphism. The external eyes are said to appear larger due to their elevated placement. It states the species is common and often found on the blossoms of umbelliferous plants, and its habitat is noted as the Southern States. The spider is classified in Tribe V, Tuberculatae, defined by having a tubercle on the abdomen and enlarged

A black and white illustration of Synema parvulum from an 1847 scientific plate. The spider is shown from a dorsal view, labeled with the number "8." The body is compact with a distinct division between cephalothorax and abdomen. The front legs are noticeably longer, and a dark transverse band is visible on the lower part of the abdomen. A female symbol is placed beside the drawing, indicating the depicted specimen is female. The drawing style is detailed but minimal, consistent with 19th-century scientific plates.

A macro photograph of a male Synema parvulum crab spider clinging to the edge of a slender green leaf, suspended against a smooth green background. The spider's glossy, copper-toned abdomen features a distinct black transverse band near the rear and a subtle white spot near the middle. Its cephalothorax is reddish brown and the long, slender legs are banded with dark hues and fine hairs, showing the characteristic elongation of the front legs. The spider is partially illuminated, making the metallic sheen of the abdomen catch the light vividly. A fine silk strand extends from the spider’s spinnerets, anchoring it subtly in space.

Synema parvulum always stands out with a beautiful coppery tone that sets it apart from many other crab spiders. Sadly, Hentz’s original plate only highlights the shape and black band. I’ve included the original description and plate of this species from Hentz in 1847.

Synema globosum, Thomisidae, is one of the species of spiders commonly known as "crab spiders", due to their morphology and typical position, with the first two pairs of legs larger and longer and always kept paired, which makes them look just like a crab; but it also has its own nickname: napoleon spider, due to the black pattern on its back that resembles the famous silhouette of Napoleon with his hat. Apart from the black silhouette, the color of the opisthosoma can vary from white to bright red, with all shades of yellow and orange in between.

Macro photo of a crab spider, likely Xysticus species (family Thomisidae), resting on a white textured surface. The spider is facing forward with its thick, spiny front legs splayed wide in a defensive posture. Its reddish-brown body is densely patterned, with short bristles and slightly raised eyes that give it an alert, confrontational expression, like it’s sizing you up on a Philly train.

I have a beat sheet and I always crack up when I see #Thomisidae. They always look like they’re from Philly and I just bumped into them on SEPTA by accident. This one’s likely a Xysticus sp.

The image shows a close-up of a small, bright green crab spider sitting on a white flower petal. The spider is grasping a metallic-colored bee with iridescent wings, holding it tightly as its prey. The spider's eyes, arranged in two rows, are clearly visible on its head, providing a sharp focus to the interaction. The entire scene is set against a blurred, vibrant green background, highlighting the colors and the delicate textures of both insects and the flower petal.

#Thomisidae are hunters and set out ambushes, thanks to their ability to change color camouflaging themselves with the surface on which they lurk. This one in the photo has some yellow spots, it's probably starting to camouflage.

A "crab spider" holds its first two pairs of legs open and raised, threateningly, towards the camera. Being capable of camouflage, its color is identical to that of the flower on which it sits waiting for prey to land there. This kind of spiders, in fact, do not hunt prey using a web but by attacking them directly, exploiting their mimetic abilities.

A female Misumena vatia, Thomisidae (Crab spider) sitting comfortably on a melilotus albus, a white flowering plant with rather tender blossoms.

A single branch of these blossoms would possibly not have supported the spiders size. Hence, she seemed to have 'tied' multiple blossoming branches together using her silk, to sit comfortably on the very top.

I remember approaching this melilotus albus because it looked a bit odd on top.

To my surprise, there sat a female Misumena vatia (Thomisidae). And, it seemed like she had engineered herself a tiny throne of blossoms by using her silk! (1/n)
