💬 Editorial: In older adults with subclinical #Hypothyroidism, deprescribing levothyroxine was feasible and safe, particularly for patients taking a dosage of ≤50 μg/d, with little impact on quality of life.

Everybody with suspected #TED or sub-clinical #hypothyroidism should be tested thoroughly, proactively.
How lucky I've been to be able to contain thyroid eye disease over the last five 5 years, overlapping #Sjogrens. This article documents the worst cases, and a new treatment.

Interesting but classifying fibromyalgia #fm as an #autoimmunediseases doesn't make much difference to me

My lived experience of #fm consistent with idea that it results from hypometabolism. If this is addressed, symptoms (overlapping #sjogrens #hypothyroidism #ted with antibodies etc etc) recede.

Saturday Morning Ruined Saturday morning, 6:30 AM. My alarm goes off, and I reach for the small bottle of small white levothyroxine tablets on my bedside table—the thyroid hormone my body can’t make since Graves’ disease took my thyroid years ago. I swallow it with water, exactly as I do every single morning. The routine is non-negotiable: take it at the same time every day, wait an hour before eating for optimal absorption, maintain consistency for stable thyroid levels. This morning, though, my body has other plans. A few minutes after taking my levothyroxine, my Dexcom G7 iPhone app alert goes off and my t:slim insulin pump vibrates. I glance at the screen: 55 mg/dL with a downward arrow. Hypoglycaemic. Of course. I need to treat this hypo immediately. Fast-acting carbohydrates, now. But I’ve just taken levothyroxine on an empty stomach, exactly as prescribed. Food—including glucose tablets—will reduce its absorption. There’s no good answer. I’m managing two endocrine diseases that demand contradictory protocols. I unwrap a roll of smarties and shove them in my mouth, already knowing I’ve probably screwed up my thyroid levels for the next few days. This morning wasn’t supposed to be a problem-solving exercise in disease management. This was supposed to be my easy Saturday morning—the one thing I look forward to all week. The plan was simple and lovely: wake up, take my levothyroxine, take an early morning birding walk in Van Horne Park, pick up huevos Mexicana from my favourite breakfast spot, make a proper Chemex pour over coffee, savour it while eating a leisurely breakfast, then give Shaan a lift to her job at the farmers market by 8:30 AM. Instead, I’m lying in bed, waiting for glucose to raise my blood sugar, watching the morning I wanted disintegrate in real time. Fifteen minutes pass. The Dexcom still shows 65 mg/dL. I wait, hoping my body will sort itself out. A few more minutes crawl by. Finally around 7:12 AM: 124 mg/dL with a fast-rising arrow. I’ve lost almost forty minutes lying in bed, stressed and waiting. Lying in bed, I start doing the maths. Shaan needs to be at the farmers market by 8:30. That means leaving home by 8:20. It’s now past 7:15 AM. Round trip to the breakfast spot: 15 minutes. Waiting for them to make huevos Mexicana: 10 minutes. Making the Chemex pour over at home: 5-10 minutes. Buffer time: none whatsoever. Even if everything goes perfectly—which it never does—I’d be rushing through the coffee ritual, anxious about being late. The walk and birding are already dead and buried. I’m not getting my huevos Mexicana. The weekend breakfast treat I’ve been thinking about since Tuesday? Gone. Next Saturday, maybe. If my blood sugar cooperates. 😭 This is what living with type 1 diabetes without a thyroid actually looks like. Not the inspirational messaging about “thriving with chronic illness.” Not the carefully managed statistics at endocrinologist appointments. This. A Saturday morning in ruins because my blood sugar dropped at exactly the wrong time. The walk. The birding. The breakfast treat. The relaxed coffee ritual. All of it, just… gone. I’ll drink my coffee—just coffee, nothing else—drive Shaan to work, and tell myself I’ll try again next weekend. But there’s no guarantee with type 1 diabetes. You just keep trying and hoping your body doesn’t ruin everything again. ### Like this: Like Loading...
