Fruity nose of red and black fruits with wood, earth, tobacco and chocolate notes. Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Dry on the palate with blueberries, plums, cooked cherries, oak, licorice, spices, chocolates, tobacco, earth and herbs. Nice finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries. This is a very tasty Merlot from Pomerol. Complex and interesting. Spicy, elegant and fruit forward. Drinking very nicely now, and will continue to age nicely in the next 7 years. I had the 2016 vintage last year and it was even better. Would be nice to revisit it in a few years. Nicely balanced and easy drinking. Good by itself or with food. A blend of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. Aged for 12 months in (50% new) French oak barrels. 14% alcohol by volume. 91 points. $65.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries. This is a delicious 14 year old second wine from this Second Growth château. Fruit forward and elegant. Rich and expressive. Although not from a great vintage, it is drinking beautifully now, and will continue to age nicely in the next few years. Would be nice to revisit it in 3 years. Nicely balanced with a soft mouthfeel. Complex and interesting. Good by itself or with food. A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. This 10 year old Merlot from Saint Emilion still feels young. Drinking very nicely now, and will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years. This second wine is good right out of the bottle, and much better after a couple of hours of airtime. Wine Spectator 91 points. Wine Advocate 92 points. This is a gorgeous Sparkling Rosé from Oregon. Elegant and nicely balanced with a nice mouthfeel. Showing a beautiful nose once it opened up. Complex and entertaining. This 13 year old is drinking beautifully now, and will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years. Showing good structure and balance. Needs 30 minutes to open up properly, so be patient. Drinking it with the winemaker made the whole experience even better. Good by itself as a sipping wine or with food. A blend of 75% Pinot Noir, 15% Pinot Meunier and 10% Chardonnay. Dark ruby in color with a wide reddish rim. Very fresh nose right out of the bottle with red fruits, wood and chocolate notes. Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Dry on the palate with cherries, currants, light wood, spices, coffee, earth, dark chocolates, tobacco leaf, herbs, peppercorn, licorice and black tea. Long finish with round tannins and tangy cherries. This 10 year old Cabernet Sauvignon based blend is drinking beautifully now. Elegant and rich. Fruit forward and complex. This Second Wine from this 3rd growth winery is delicious. Nicely balanced with a nice mouthfeel. Soft, spicy and entertaining. Feels young, and will continue to age nicely in the next 5 to 7 years. Needs a couple of hours to open up properly, but good right out of the bottle too. A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. Aged for 13 months in (20% new) French Oak barrels. 13% alcohol by volume. 92 points. $50.

Beautiful nose of blueberries, black plums, currants, cedar, chocolates, earth, vegetables, spices, tobacco leaf, dark coffee, dark chocolates, herbs, black tea and black pepper. Full-bodied and elegant with medium acidity and long legs. Dry on the palate with black currants, plums, cooked cherries, spices, cedar, licorice, chocolates, dark coffee, pencil lead, earth and light vegetables. Long finish with round tannins and tangy cherries. This is a delicious 13 year old Cabernet Sauvignon based blend from Saint Julien. Rich and fruit forward. Elegant and nicely balanced with a soft mouthfeel. This Second Growth Bordeaux is starting to show age on the nose, but the palate is still fresh tasting. Will continue to age nicely in the next 10 to 15 years. Shows good structure with nice tannins. Expressive, and good by itself or with food. A blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot. Aged in (80% new) French Oak barrels for 18 months. 13.5% alcohol by volume. 92 points. $120.

Chateau Haut Cardinal Saint Emilion Grand Cru 2014, Bordeaux, France It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back! Deep ruby in color with a reddish/ brick rim. Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Dry on the palate with nice complexity. Showing currants, plums, cooked cherries, spices, oak, licorice, chocolates, tobacco, herbs, earth and light vegetables. Short finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cranberries. This 11-year-old Merlot from Bordeaux is a little unbalanced, but drinkable nonetheless. Elegant and complex, but lost some of its fruits by now. Good right out of the bottle, and better after an hour of airtime. I had this vintage 2 years ago and it is drinking a little better now. A good food wine that I paired with pizza. 100% Merlot grapes from 70 year old vines, were aged in French oak barrels (70% new). A small production of only 9,000 bottles. 13% alcohol by volume. 89 points. $35 (current vintage).
